Using a combination of the push, Charlie's power, and hitchhiking, the pair escape through Albany, New York and are briefly taken in by a farmer named Irv Manders near the fictional town of Hastings Glen, New York; however, they are tracked down by Shop agents, who attempt to kill Andy and take Charlie at the Manders farm. At Andy's instruction, Charlie unleashes her power, incinerating the entire farm and fending off the agents, killing a few of them. With nowhere else to turn, the pair flees to the fictional town of Tashmore, Vermont and takes refuge in a cabin that had once belonged to Andy's grandfather.
Andy's plan succeeds, and he and Charlie are reunited in a barn for the first time in six months, but Rainbird is already there, planning to kill them both. A crucial distraction is provided by Cap, who is losing his mind from a side effect of being pushed. Andy pushes Rainbird into leaping from the upper level of the barn, breaking his leg. Rainbird then shoots Andy in the neck and fires another shot at Charlie, but she uses her power to melt the bullet in midair, and then sets Rainbird and Cap on fire. Mortally wounded, Andy then instructs Charlie to use her power to escape and to inform the public, to make sure the government cannot do anything like this ever again. After he dies, Charlie, grief-stricken and furious, sets the barn on fire; she then uses her pyrokinesis to kill the employees and blow up their getaway vehicles. The military is called, but Charlie obliterates their vehicles; when they fire at her, she melts their bullets. Charlie blows up the building, leaving the entire Shop facility burning, with almost everyone dead.
"Andy could feel something building in the air, building up around Charlie like an electric charge. The hair on his arms suddenly began to stir and move, like kelp in an invisible tide. He looked down at her and saw her face, so small, now so strange.
It's coming, he thought helplessly. It's coming, oh my God, it really is."
In 1969 Andy McGee and Vicky Tomlinson participated in a drug experiment run by a veiled government agency known as The Shop. One year later they marry. Two years after that their little girl, Charlie, sets her teddy bear on fire . . . by looking at it.
Now that Charlie is eight, she doesn't start fires anymore. Her parents have taught her to control her pyrokinesis, the ability to set anything--toys, clothes, even people--aflame.
But The Shop knows about and wants this pigtailed "ultimate weapon." Shop agents set out to hunt down Charlie and her father in a ruthless and terrifying chase that ranges from the streets of New York to the backwoods of Vermont. And once they get her they plan to use Charlie's capacity for love to force her into developing a power as horrifyingly destructive as it is seductive. What they don't take into account is that even a child can know the pleasure of the whip hand and the satisfaction of revenge.
Let the reader beware, for Firestarter is Stephen King at his most mesmerizing . . . and menacing.
The wood boards are made by Jim Croft and I am very fortunate to be working with him on this project. Jim is a Medieval bookbinder and papermaker. He is internationally known for his skills, and he travels annually to various locations in the USA to teach students how to make books with wooden covers.
Steven Stroud is the artist who created the art which appears on the 1st edition dust jacket. Working with Steven on this project has been a joy. He is such a great guy and was so willing to spend the time creating some original drawings exclusively for this edition. There are three different drawings to choose from, and the art is signed by Steven and then bound into the book.
In a world dominated by millions of manufactured objects, it is very fulfilling to surround yourself with people who make beautiful things by hand. In working on these projects, I have been inspired by the artists, bookbinders and in this case, a master woodworker. I love the authenticity of this process, and how these boards began as wood logs and went through numerous stages including sawing, splitting, hand planing and shaping to create the beautiful wood boards that will grace this custom bound edition.
i love stephen king and got into him about that age, the shining, pet semetary and graveyard shift are a good place to start
avoid imo misery, geralds game (good but talks about sex and handcufffing), IT, and dolores clairborne just cos of the themes that are in them imo
but hey i was watching poltergeist at 8 years old ( my mum let me watch whatever i wanted horror wise at a early age) so my judgement may be slightly out
oh in terms of firestarter, the book is better than the film imo and readable at that age
someone mentioned dean koontz, hes good but some of his books are a lot more spookier than stephen king imo
the green mile is great but the short story rita hayworth and the shawshank redemptoin is completley differnt from the shawshank redemption book but a good read on its own same with reading the body (Stand by Me film was based on that) it was a short story in memory in four past midnight (could be and will prob be wrong)
i wasnt a big fan of tom gordon and later books as i felt it moved away from a bit of the horror side and more in to pyschological thinking
if it were me - id let her watching the shining film (jack nicolson version) then let her read the book as it goes a bit more indepth with the psychic side, reading then watching can be a slight let down
but like i said earlier i arent the best judge cos my mum let me watch shit like this from about 8yrs old (didnt do me any harm, dont get freaked out and still love horror (real horror))
With that in mind, the world isn't likely to be lacking for new King movie adaptations anytime soon, especially since the author keeps pumping out books. Firestarter is, in fact, one of King's novels set to receive a second filmed take, with heavy horror hitter Blumhouse Productions and Oscar-winner Akiva Goldsman producing, and relative newcomer Keith Thomas in the director's chair. It remains to be seen exactly when the remake will begin production.

Eight years later, Andy and Charlie flee across America, constantly looking for sanctuary from a group of government agents from The Shop, who are trying to find them, capture them, and harness their powers for the military. Charlie and Andy flee from New York to Albany hitching a ride in a taxi and later to a motel in Hastings Glen where they spend the night. With The Shop on their heels, Charlie and Andy leave the motel and hitch a ride provided by Irv Manders who promises to take them closer to St Johnsbury. Under the aliases, Roberta and Frank stay for lunch at the farm provided by Norma Manders. The couple already aware of the police search is suspicious whether Charlie may or may not have been held against her will by Andy. Irv, however, realizes there is a different story to it. But before he can be convinced by Andy, The Shop shows up at farm. Irv gets shot. To protect her father, Charlie sets The Shop agents on fire, the farm burning along with them. In Irvs Willys' Jeep, Charlie and Andy take off to Vermont.In Washington, John Rainbird extracts every piece of information out of Dr. Wanless about Charlie McGee. Then he kills him. Two days later Charlie and Andy arrive at the cottage in Tashmore Pond. The provisions untouched they settle down for the night. They even stay for winter where Andy crosses the frozen pond into the city to buy clothes and food. At the end of winter he decides its time to write to the newspapers. But The Shop gets to the letters first.
In a flashback to 1980 Andy experiences an odd feeling at work and goes home. There he finds his wife Vicky, dead at the hands of The Shop. For some time they had been aware of taps on their phones and people watching them, but he had not expected it would come to this. Andy pursues the kidnappers of his daughter and finds her at a rest stop where he uses his abilities to incapacitate them, then taking Charlie to safety. Andy slowly regains his powers and initiates an escape attempt. Rainbird figures out the plan and stops them, killing Andy in the process. Grief turns to fury as Charlie uses her now perfected pyrokinesis to battle her way out of the compound, killing many, and destroying much of the compound in the process. After spending time with a couple that had previously sheltered them, Charlie flees again, just as Shop agents discover her location, once again staying one step ahead of The Shop, and goes to the Rolling Stone magazine to give an interview telling her story, because she sees it as an "unbiased source with no ties to the government".
Charlie McGee: Daughter of Andy McGee and Vicky Tomlinson. She has the abilities of pyrokinesis which makes her a firestarter. She is on the run from the men of The Shop that want to capture her and her father.
Eddie Delgrado: He is a soldier who was talking to the phone with his girlfriend Sally Bradford in the moment charlie was stealing coins from the phone booth. He was making excuses to girlfriend which Charlie deem him as trying to trick his girlfriend in order for him to stand his girlfriend up. After he left the phone booth, he had daydream about his revenge of love and resentment towards his girlfriend until he felt his feet warm to suddenly be on fire, which Charlie caused because of the conversation she overheard. He sprinted across the concourse until going inside the women's room in which he scared a young woman. He placed his feet inside the toilet until two security guards burst in the women's room which asked for them to wait. He was led out of the women's room carrying his burn shoes and with his uniform gone below his knees by the security guards into the office.
