The Definition of a Military Hero

A military hero is someone who has performed an act or service above and beyond the call of duty... which is doing more than what was expected under the existing conditions the act was performed. Most, but not all military heroes are
awarded with a medal, ribbon or badge, but many acts of personal heroism go unrewarded because they were undetected or possibly because of supervisory oversight or discrimination.

One of the missions tasked of The War Library when it was created in 1988 is to collect the names of grand military medal recipients since no such database has ever been universally centralized. List collection and verification of names is
ongoing and online.

As International Veterans Day approaches, listing and confirming the names of medal recipients is not only important to provide family members of future generations their legacy of military heroism, it is also important to identify and
exclude the names of fictional recipients who falsely claim medals in order to achieve some form of personal or public benefit.

If you or a family member are the recipient of a grand military medal you should ensure those names are listed. (You may also display military photos.) Being a recipient of a grand medal is not just a personal or family matter, it is a
public matter because medals are honorably awarded by the grateful public the hero served to protect and defend.
