Dear All
I wander if you have experienced complaints of motorcyclists on crack sealing and if you have any specific guidance how to solve this problem -on an already crack sealed pavement  surface, and how to avoid its occurrence in the future
Thanks

Hello Shimon - In my experience this has been a common complaint and one I recall hearing several times during my career at the Ohio DOT...the Ohio DOT folks who are a part of this group may be able to share the approach(s) used for any resolution of such.

As an experienced rider of nearly 20 years, I can definitely confirm it is an issue and a situation recognized by anyone who has been riding for a while.

Best of luck with your search.

Diana

From Gary Mayes, Michigan DOT maintenance Engineer.

I have heard some complaints from riders and I have experienced some slipping on local road that have excessive crack sealing.  I wouldn’t say it’s a big problem for MDOT,  because we don’t typically put a lot of crack sealing on pavements that would cause a problem for motorcyclist.   That said…. some local agencies crack seal  pavements  that are too far gone, pavements that should have been milled and replaced.

I don’t have any suggestion on how to resolve the problem if you already have too much crack seal on the pavement other than mill and resurface or an ultra-thin.   How to help avoid it in the future?   Do proper scoping of projects to ensure that they are good candidates for crack seal.

Our Maintenance crews don’t do a lot of crack sealing anymore, the CPM program does most of it.

In South Carolina we recommend 3 linear feet of crack seal per 1 Sq. Yd. of pavement. Any more than that and crack sealing is not considered a good choice as a pavement preservation treatment. While this guideline is not always followed, and sometimes crack sealing is used in lieu of more extensive preservation or repair methods, I have not heard of any issues with motorcyclists having traction issues on areas with crack sealing.
