Solitary confinement or Solitary work or Employee that works alone.

I have a municipal client who asked the following question: “I was wondering how the rest of the municipalities handle an employee who works alone.  Does anyone have a call out systems or a reporting system for the employee to report every few hour to assure that he’s safe and healthy”?

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated

I am not aware of a similar situation with employees that work alone at Ohio DOT, so we don’t have a reporting system.  However, in the last couple of years we replaced our statewide low band radio system with a 900mhz MARCS radio system and installed a radio in all of our dump trucks and many of our other field vehicles.  The MARCS system is extremely reliable, clear and easy to use, and has largely eliminated the need for field personnel to rely on the antiquated and unreliable low band radio system as well as personal cell phones to communicate with the garage/office as well as each other.  The MARCS radios are programmed to work in statewide talk groups as well as with outside entities (such as law enforcement).
