THE Justice Development and Peace Centre (JDPC), St. Dominic Catholic Church, Yaba, Lagos in collaboration with the Justice Development and Peace Centre (JDPC), Lagos Archdiocese and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers, St. Dominic Catholic Church, Yaba, Lagos, recently issued a communiqué at the end of activities to mark International Women’s Day celebrations.
According the communiqué: “Women who have interest in politics should insist that meetings and other engagements of political parties should be held in more-friendly hours than at nights.
“Women should seek to maximize their numerical strength by supporting credible and knowledgeable female candidates in any elections.
“Civil society groups should advocate for the inclusion of more women in politics and the reservation of a good proportion of seats in the legislature for women.
“Women should demand for the pooling of funds to support the political aspirations of credible women and should imitate worthy role models in family life and professional careers.
“Women must support fellow women’s political aspirations and protect themselves from archaic and dehumanizing cultural practices
The women joined their voices to condemn terrorism, saying: “it is evil, inhuman and it is a crime against civilization and as such, must not be encouraged by anyone or group of persons.”
The women also pleaded with the government to step up efforts to rescue our Chibok girls and set up a re-orientation system that would help the girls when they return.
The women urged the Federal Government to effectively protect the Nigerian people from all forms of aggression, adding that every citizen has a duty to give valuable information to the security agencies to help provide better security of lives and property.
The women advised all mothers to teach their male and female children how to carry out domestic chores as this would be useful to them in their adult lives.
On the quality of education, the groups agreed that “Quality education and enlightenment have remained the bedrock of total liberation of women from harmful practices in our society. ”
