THE WOMEN’S SITUATION ROOM - NIGERIA

The Women’s Platform for Peaceful Elections comprising of women’s organisations working on women, peace and security in Nigeria, in collaboration with UNWOMEN Nigeria.

The Women’s Situation Room-Nigeria (WSR-Nigeria) is a response by women activists/groups, civil society and the international community to concerns for potential electoral violence as the country prepares for Presidential elections scheduled for 28th March 2015.

The Women's Situation Room is a process initiated in Liberia by the Angie Brooks International Centre (ABIC) which is being replicated in Nigeria to ensure women’s participation in an enabling environment in the forthcoming elections with support from UNWomen, UNDP and the European Union (EU). It is a coordinating mechanism for women to significantly contribute to peaceful and credible elections in accordance with United Nations Security Council 1325. The process engages and lobbies all stakeholders in the electoral process to actively participate in the prevention of all forms of electoral violence before, during and after the March 2015 elections.

Eminent Woman, comprising four Eminent Nigerian Women together with our team of nine African Eminent Women will remain in the situation room and respond to incidents from women observers in the field on polling day. Security threats once identified will determine the line of action to be taken and what high level personalities the eminent women should contact to engage political parties and other key actors for immediate intervention.

The Eminent Women with support from President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia who is Champion of the Women’s Situation Room will access and engage high profile actors from the sub-region to intervene when necessary to ensure the elections of 28th March 2015 are peaceful.
