Hello All-
I hope you are enjoying your vacations. There is some time-sensitive Winter-Con information that needs to go out soon, so it is best if I update you as soon as possible.
For those of you who have never been to Winter Congress, the Chair and Clerk team is like a moderator in the room. The exception is that kids stay in the room the whole day, so the Chair and Clerk team runs through multiple bills and debates for the duration of the convention. The chair is the "moderator", whereas the clerk assists the chair and runs votes on bills back and forth between chambers. For those of you who have taken IR in the past, this is very similar to the teachers at Model UN.
It is extremely fun and you are encouraged to apply if interested, however, I would suggest that you have a high level of familiarity with moderating and debating procedure as well. Email the finished application to Aadi at atol...@jsa.org by the 15th of January.
Secondly, Bills (resolutions) need to be turned in to Edeline Chen (edeli...@gmail.com) by the 17th of January.Again, all of you are encouraged to write bills, even if you have no experience.
Bills can be anything that you think should be changed in government, (as in IR), however, for maximum success at getting your bill through, I would advise that you stay away from the cliches of legalizing marijuana, changing abortion laws, the death penalty, etc.
Examples of successful bills from last year are : 1. A bill to reform drug testing in sports 2. A resolution to annex Canada 3. A resolution to mandate helmet use while riding a motorcycle 4. A bill to ensure the mental stability of firearm users
Be creative, folks. Bills must be sponsored by more than 1 person. Teams of 2, 3, or even 4 work best. They also need to be written in a certain format, which is attached.
That's it for now. I know that was a lot, but the earlier this is done, the better. If you have any questions, ask an upperclassman who has gone before.
And once again, your participation level directly correlates to your convention experience.
