Dear Latika:
Even after all the songs and dance during the last 2 years of Raahgiri and another 4 weeks of car-free day, for which Gurgaon is already become so famous, you still want to "make more noise??!!"

Then who is listening? Ooops!

Please find attached a short story on the impact of car-freed day on NMT infrastructure. I hope you like the story!

Best

Can our lungs take any more air pollution? Flyovers and underpasses won't solve the problem - public transport will!

I hope the HUDA and MCG leaders will convey the city's determination to become a living, breathing city instead of a car-dominated monstrosity.

Cheers,
Manas

Dear Bhawani Shankar Tripathy ji And Friends,

NMT Track, Reduction of Carbon Footprints, Clean air, SAFETY are now lost child,  What has to be done is Very important BUT What not to do is equally important,  I am sure if we decide to do some thing for society  that can be done easily,  I am disappointed in years of Hype and hoopla we failed to get Just one Foot of "Proper" Cylce Track,  which could have Motivated guys to cycle...... Bhawani ji Great Work to show how footpaths are Misused and poor pedestrians are Compelled to walk on roads risking their lives

Bhawani,

What has changed with Raahgiri and 4 weeks of car free day.

1) Government is noticing cyclists and need for creating spaces for them. The new road coming up in Udyog Vihar is looking to make  provision  for cyclists and pedestrians. The road is getting constructed by MCG with help of experts.
2) Sensitivity with people regarding cyclists on the road .
3) Increase in number of people using cycles to move around , If not, at least using for recreation and  improving their fitness.
4) Raahgiri is getting  people from all walks of life to interact with each other.
5) Nasscom compa‎nies are working to reduce cars on the road. Each week, number is reducing. It's a long battle but at least an effort is being made. 5000 cars off the road is also helping to reduce pollution.
6) People are looking at options of using other modes of transport, however difficult it seems.
7) Opportunity to look at private Bus companies working to bridge this gap.

‎Who is listening -  people, making an effort by doing something.

Need for more noise is to spend time with MCG, HUDA with experts of NMT. Make them understand our point of view.

I am wondering why did I write - who is listening???

‎Best
Latika

Dear Bhawani,

Your research tells the real story. A couple of points though:

1. The walled green belt was earlier used for parking (by some of my office colleagues too, I am afraid) so it is progress of a sort.

2. The change on the ground is one thing, the change in people's minds and hearts is another - and perhaps also valuable. I can safely say that hundreds of my colleagues are sensitive to this issue that earlier didn't know or care much.

I too am struggling with the question - what else do we have to do to get the governance we deserve? You are right - creating this infrastructure is not rocket science. We seem to have all sorts of money for new underpasses and flyovers, but none for decent footpaths, cycle tracks and bus service.

Cheers,
Manas

Dear Bhawani,

I looked at your presentation again and really appreciate your effort in putting this together. This is reality of our Gurgaon.

I was just wondering, may be you can help the citizens with suggestion, advise on what should they do.

‎When we are trying, it  does not have your approval and concerns us. I don't know any one who understands Gurgaon as well as you do. ‎ There is a feeling of frustration when you bash us up.

Just wondering if we can start defining certain goals and take strategic baby steps, such as having the first cycling track/lane (already done, maintenance to be taken up), followed by defining first cycling/walking track from one residential cluster to a office space cluster and so on.

If we all out our energies together in pushing one task at a time instead of pushing for the while macroscopic vision, we might get our amenities.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers!

Dear Latika:
Thanks for your response.

I have been a part of Gurgaon's civil society for 16 years now...and had the good fortune to bring to light many of the deficiencies both as an RWA member and one of Gurgaon's concerned citizen. You know it.

Thanks to TOI and HT, and a number of Hindi newspapers, that carried my stories not because I was an "expert" in anything but because of simple sincere common sense logic....a logic that comes from "living it out in the city day in and day out and being a part of the ecosystem."

I have not studied urban planning, but I think most urban planners around the world have made mistakes by not engaging citizens in their planning process....resulting in infrastructure development that creates more problems than solutions.

The road in Udyog vihar that you mention is NOT inside Udyog Vihar but the "Old Delhi-Gurgaon road" on which the Maruti factory is situated. This was the old Jaipur highway till NH8 got built. I live on this 4-lane road (2 lanes on both sides), and have suffered years and years of inconvenience owing to its narrowness, poor quality construction, but more importantly because of 100s of huge Maruti trawlers that choked the road after 8 pm till 8 am in the morning. This road, from Kapashera border to Old Gurgaon (Fountain chowk) on which the HUDA office is built, has been an issue of concern for everybody. Every monsoon this will be one road in Gurgaon which will be in knee deep waters. All sewer lines are fully choked, and often you will see Large automated sewerage machines deployed. Thousand of Maruti workers walk or cycle on this road every day from village Carterpuri, Sirhaul, Mulahera, Dundahera. It has always been one of the most chaotic roads in Gurgaon. Street lighting never worked on this road for years till about four years back when new poles were installed. After 15 days hey stopped working. Its redesigning and replanning has been on the drawing board for 10 years now. The road belonged to HUDA till it was handed over to MCG in 2011. And it has been a project since. In fact, Maruti itself had proposed to get the road redesigned and constructed with its funds and replace the sewer lines (maruti has often maintained this road, including deploying marshals to manage traffic). MAruti hired a consulting firm to do the designs (Cognizent), which submitted a plan in 2014 july with cycle tracks and pavements. But MCG decided it will construct and got its own plans made which has been with Panchkula for two years now with many iterations and revisions. I have been a party to all these developments and even possess a copy of the Maruti plan with me should you be interested to see.

Unfortunately my full-time employment keeps me from engaging with administrative bodies as much as I would have loved to.

Anyway, I have and will always support all genuine struggles for developing Gurgaon as a living, nurturing, and inspiring city so that quality of life improves for everyone - everyone!

Best wishes.
Bhawni

The MCG Commissioner, who appears to be on this email, stated in a meeting two weeks ago that the final MCG design also has cycle tracks and even has special provisions for cycles at intersections.

Dear Friends,
"To eliminate a problem, We must First Find the Root Cause, and Then Eliminate it"  secondly in Our System "Officers" are Too busy in things they "Feel" are important that to Raise issues of public Concern,  one has to try and meet as if it their "Personal" Work,  In recent past I had Studied and PROVEN on Record that There are Blunders in Road and Even Footpath Designs Accepted by Apex scientific Body CSIR and CRRI (Central Road Research Institute) and even MORTH & Appropriate bodies  had accepted that all those engineers,  DTP, and Designers WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE IN FINALISING ROAD AND FOOTHPATH DESIGN Can be Booked with IPC 304A (causing hurt by negligence)  as there is no cystal clear definition of NEGLIGANCE, but all must join together to FIX Responsibility of any Sytem Failure,  only Court Route appears to be best as After 3 Years of Road Safety Audit over 108 RTIs in Delhi NCR now I have enough material to prove that EVEN WE ARE NOT CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY :(  First,   Cycle Tracks are proposed  in New Maruti Road design by MCG,  but HUDA is not Bothered about the Fundamental Right of Poor who also use cycle as their main mode of travel for earning bread and butter,  On Ground if I see a Lot has to be done,  I wish one day We declare "Misuse" of Footpaths a legal offence,  also all those who are negligent in performing duties are facing trials, I am sure in this platform all have same feelings in principle to improve our Commuting by the Soul of NMT what is embedded in the name of our Group,   I strongly feel that All must meet periodically and brainstorm to find best way to pressure system to do what is ryt and abstain from standard practices as soon I fear Gurgaon will go Faridabad way,  you can buy a car but can use it to go to hospital even if it is daytime working hours,   Owing to poor planning poor designs and not listening to those who use it Together we stand, each and every one who is doing his or her bit deserved appreciation.
Thanks
Saxena
