Hello Earth Science Club Members,

I've met with the 4th-8th grade teaches at the Cottonwood Valley Charter School and I have some tentative plans for outreach opportunities.

Karen is the 4th and 5th grade teacher and she would like a hydrology lesson.  Once a month she takes her students to the Rio Grande to do some water testing (I think she's out there with Bruce today).  Her next trip is November 9th and she would like a hydrology student to come in before the 9th and maybe do some water testing around the CVCS campus with an emphasis on how the data should be interpreted.  She suggested a possible November 1 date, because student have the 31st off and they will be "checked out" on November 1st recovering from the thrill of Halloween.

Our big project will be the liquid nitrogen volcano experiment.  I would like to do the experiment on November 22nd at 9:15am (another time when students have "checked out" right before Thanksgiving Break and need excitement to stimulate learning).  The teachers want to bring all of their students (4th-8th) to Tech Field which will count as a community field trip for them.  I was hoping to have ESC members go to the 6th grade class before hand and the 7th and 8th grade classes afterward to explain to the students what is going to or what just happened.

So, if you interested in doing the hydrology experiments with the 4th and 5th grade, the liquid nitrogen volcano experiment, and/or teaching about volcanic processes to the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes, let me know and we can get this rolling.

Maybe we can have a meeting next week after seminar to discuss plans and what's expected.

Nicole

I wasn't able to make the ESC meeting last week, but I am interested in helping out with the outreach program.  I would be willing to help with either the hydro or volcano demo, let me know what help is needed.
