Dear Activist,

Call today and urge your Senator Bingaman to support a substantial
drawdown of U.S. troops from Afghanistan this summer by signing the
Merkley-Udall letter.

Capitol Switchboard:
(202) 224-3121Pressure is building for the United States to begin a
significant withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan this summer.

More Senators are signing on to a letter [1] by Senators Jeff Merkley
(D-OR) and Tom Udall (D-NM) demanding a "sizeable and sustained"
reduction in U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan beginning in July 2011.
73% of Americans want to see a substantial withdrawal of troops this
summer, according to a recent Washington Post poll. [2]

At this writing, fourteen Senators are on the letter.

The signers at this point are:

Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT)

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA)

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH)

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD)

Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL)

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA)

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT)

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ)

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR)

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)

Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM)

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR)

Twenty-three national organizations representing over 30 million
voters, including MoveOn, the National Organization for Women, and
Peace Action, have urged Senators to sign this letter. [3] Former
military officials have also endorsed the letter. [4] If they have not
yet signed, please contact your Senator(s) today at (202) 224-3121 to
ask that they join their colleagues in pressing the President to begin
ending America's longest war.

When the President sent 30,000 additional American troops to
Afghanistan in 2009, he promised that the U.S. would begin withdrawal
of those forces by July 2011 with all combat troops out by 2014. The
President is close to a decision on how large an initial troop
withdrawal to order and a number of press accounts have made clear
that the President is getting pressure from the Pentagon to minimize
the troop cuts.

Please call your Senators today at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to
sign the letter asking for "sizeable and sustained" troop cuts to be
announced now.

Time is short, because the President is likely to announce a decision
on troop withdrawal soon. The Merkley-Udall letter can have a real
impact on the President if it is signed by a large number of Senators.
Your Senators need to hear from you today about their need to sign the
Merkley-Udall letter.
