Dear wonderful volunteers,
Over the summer, we continued to navigate a period of uncertainty surrounding government funding, including the loss of support from the Prescott grant, which has been a major part of NMLC’s budget for the past several years.
In response, we’ve focused on reducing costs, pursuing new grant opportunities, completing the installation of our life support systems, and advancing renovations to the Discovery Center. Reopening the Discovery Center will be a key milestone in NMLC’s evolution and in securing our future, not only as a space for education and community engagement, but also as an important source of earned revenue to help sustain operations year-round.
We have also been actively recruiting for animal care staff, but we need a full team in place before we can bring back the box turtles, bring in any new animals, or resume operations. While we remain cautiously optimistic about joining this season’s sea turtle rehabilitation efforts, it currently appears unlikely that we will be part of the triage phase. We continue to stay in close communication with NOAA, NEAq, and WBWS to coordinate as needed.
As some of you may know, Amy Collins is no longer with NMLC. In the meantime, the Board is covering day-to-day responsibilities while continuing to plan for the organization’s long-term future.
We’re fortunate to have funding restricted for sea turtle care and the Discovery Center’s reopening; however, general operating support and funding for future seal rehabilitation remain significant needs.
Thank you for your continued dedication, patience, and belief in NMLC’s mission. Your support means the world to us as we work hard to position the organization for a strong, sustainable future.
With gratitude,
NMLC Board of Trustees
