Hi Uday M S,
Congratulations for being all set to finish your engineering and best of luck to you for a great career ahead. Below are few points to get you started with career planning. As they say “well begun is half done”. And yes thanks for being registered user of eLitmus - India’s largest fresher assessment and recruitment company.
Delayed joining date – opportunity to act not relax
So you have a campus offer and your joining is in August or may be as late as December. You think it will be good to just chill at home and get pampered by parents. Bad idea!! Here is why:
We got these insights from a young man by name of Praveen. N from 2012 batch, who studied in an engineering college in North Karnataka and had a TCS joining which had delayed joining. What initially looked like a bad news turned out to be a blessing. Due to family financial constraints he joined a much smaller company as it had immediate joining. Every one advised him against it as salary was “lower” and 3 years bond. Today he is a very happy man. His batch mates who waited till March 2013 for the joining, are now lost in a large company, did not get a ny exposure, want to change jobs but not getting any and to make it worse got paid lesser money (read do not go by CTCs). He in turn got great hikes, has niche skills which are high in demand, got lot of responsibilities, exposure and direct mentoring from seniors which resulted in higher confidence and better growth. He recently wrote in to say thank you and as he has two offers in hand and searching for something still better before resigning from his current company.
TCS/ Cognizant/ IBM/ Infosys etc offer great training or food court but NOT career
This is not our opinion but that of hundreds of our test takers who are willing to apply to other companies through eLitmus even as fresher and letting go of their experience. Good training, fun life and nice campus were some of the reasons why they had decided to join them at first place. Do not take our word for it - reach out to any senior of yours and you will know less than 10% of freshers get good quality work.
To make it worse after using your skills for few years, some of them lay you off as they can get same skill for cheaper costs. You might want to refer following links

(b) Layoff news of TCS - how they are laying of professionals with 10 years experience
Do not go by CTCs / Hikes matter
CTC do not tell the complete picture. Here is why
This is one of the many reasons why a company like Accenture scores much higher than other of its contemporaries. Equally there are companies like Raremile in eLitmus portfolio which works on latest technologies and within 6 months takes your salary to Rs 3.5 lakh from Rs 2.4 lakh.
Choose young small companies over Large IT services companies
In case you have offer from both and are confused - prefer small companies which have been in existence for less than 5-7 years, that will be a safer bet. Do not be worried about it closing down. You would have learnt so much that even if the company closes down - you will have hundreds of more jobs because you know your stuff. However avoid small companies where founder pedigree is not great. Also if you have a choice – take stock options and settle for lesser salary.
Last but not the least – get a pH Test Score irrespective of fact that you have job or not
The earlier you take the pH Test the better irrespective of the fact that you have a campus job or not.
If you have a campus job, you will find it very difficult to go out of the way to register for the test and actually go to a test center on Sunday. Additionally you will have the fear of “what if I score less?”. We recently ran into a candidate who took the pH Test in June 2010 from an Engineering college in Noida. He had a campus offer from Infosys and had returned to his home town in U.P post engineering. He had no intentions of travelling to Delhi (we did not have test centers in UP& nbsp;that point of time). He took the test because his girlfriend had to take it and he accompanied. He later went on to do his M.Tech from an IIT. In April 2014, he visited eLitmus after gap of 2 years to apply to Amazon (15+ lakhs per annum). Since it was a lateral job – he could use his 4 year old score. He told us that he never thought the test will ever be useful for him and is meant only for people without jobs. He has promised a big treat to his girl friend about to becoming wife.
If you do not have a job, you should hurry up as between 8th August and 6th Sep 15, we expect around 1190 positions from various companies - many of them with salary above 4 lakh (going up to Rs 7 lakh per annum). Also taking the test early will help you understand your shortcoming and give you enough time to reappear with preparation if you get a lesser score. Smriti from AIT, Gurgaon from 2014 batch took the test first time on 11th May 2014 and followed it up with another test on 3rd August 2014. She could land herself a job which offered her Rs 5.93 lakh per annum with McAfee (Intel Security). There are numerous such examples. Equally there are hundreds of candidates whose dream company recruited in Nov 2014 and they took the test in December 2014/ January 2015. In today’s world of uncertain business environment it is impossible to predict when your dream company would hire through off-campus. Also if you try to take the test just before your dream company is hiring - what if you score poor or the pH test center capacity is reached and you are unable to attend the test. As they say “early bird catches the worm”
