Dear Students,

Mr Arpit Agarwal placed in Janhit Foundation Meerut  on behalf of his organisation has invited students of NMIMS to be part of an international water pollution testing project. This project is conducted
by International Water Association, Netherlands. This project is internationally known as ‘WORLD WATER MONITORING DAY’. In India, this project has been taken forward by the prestigious NGO, Janhit Foundation (Meerut).

WORLD WATER MONITORING DAY is a global educational outreach program that aims to build public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by empowering citizens to carry out basic monitoring of their local water bodies.

A simple test kit enables everyone, children and adults, to sample local water bodies for a set of water quality parameters including temperature, acidity (pH), clarity (turbidity) and dissolved oxygen
(DO). Results are then shared with participating communities around the globe through the WWMD website (http://www.worldwatermonitoringday.org/

STUDENTS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH WATER TESTING KITS FREE OF COST. This brings a unique opportunity to students to learn how the water is tested for possible contamination. Each kit can be used to test 50 different water samples.

Each student can carry the waster testing kit when they go for their Summer internship  to different parts of country, compile the results and send the results to Janhit Foundation.
The whole procedure takes just 5 minutes for each water sample. Further details of testing are clearly mentioned in the kit. The format in which data has to be tabulated in attached to this mail (Water sample Data Tabulation format.xlsx).

A summary of water testing procedure is as follows:

 1.      To check turbidity – Paste a sticker provided in a kit at the bottom of the jar available in the kit. Fill the jar with water and see the visibility of the sticker pasted in the jar. Compare it with
the sheet available in the kit. Three(3) different levels of turbidity can be found(0 JTU, 40 JTU, 100 JTU).

2.      To check Dissolved Oxygen – Take the water sample in the small test tube available in the kit. Put 2 tablets of dissolved oxygen testing present in the kit in each sample. Stir it till it dissolves
completely. Compare the change in the colour of water with the three (3) different levels present in the sheet available in the kit (0 ppm, 4ppm, 8ppm).

3.      To check pH level – Take the water sample in the larger test tube available in the kit. Put 1 tablet of pH testing present in the kit in each sample. Stir it. Compare the change in the colour of
water with the seven (7) different levels shown in the sheet at various levels of pH.

Please note that the results have be compiled and sent back by August end. Do get in touch with Mr Arpit Agarwal ( 91-9167342715)and his team placed with Janhit Foundation.

Regards,
Dr. Meena Galliara

SUBJECT: Invitation to International Water Pollution Testing Project:
Janhit Foundation

Dear Dr. Meena Galleria,

Greetings from Janhit Foundation, Meerut!!

First of all, we would like to congratulate you for your 'WE CARE'
initiative spread across the country and helping thousands of poor
people. The three interns namely Arpit Agarwal, Nitin Gupta and Apar
Bansal are working on a water pollution control project in a small
village called Nanglamal near Meerut. We appreciate their efforts and
now want to extend this opportunity to all the students of SBM, NMIMS.

We are working on a project by_ International Water Association,
Netherlands. http://www.worldwatermonitoringday.org/ [4]_

As a part of this project, we have been provided with water testing
kits by the organization to test the pollution in water . We are
required to test water samples from different parts of India. The NGO
which compiles a report for tests which have been undertaken in the
maximum number of different places wins the award.

WE WOULD LIKE TO PARTNER WITH NMIMS FOR THIS PROJECT. Testing of water
using this kit is very easy to execute and takes only 4 mintues per
sample.

Benefits to NMIMS through this project:
1. If this project is won then NMIMS' name will be associated with the
same and will be publicized with us in national newspapers.
2. Students will come to know of different parameters and methods used
to test pollution in water. We will provide sampling kits free of cost
to you.
3. Its a social initiative and aims at improving the health of people
of India. The reports compiled out of these samples are indicative of
hygiene and pollution across the nation and will help us to gather funds
and improve living conditions of people of India.

The results of these samples have to sent to us till mid of August,
hence there is a lot of time and students can work at their convenience.
If you are willing to help us then we would like to send you the kits
with your students when they return to Mumbai. Please reply as earliest
beacuse they are coming on 21st January 2012.

We look forward to your help in this initiative of making India
pollution free.

Warm Regards,
Anita Rana
