This group is comprised of physicians, nurses, public health experts, advocates and other individuals working towards regulatory change in New Mexico encouraging ‘Circular Sanitation’ to expand available options for more environmentally sound, regenerative, solid building, and water saving methods of sanitizing human excrement (liquid and solid) to include low tech 'Humanure' thermophilic composting as used by oursoil.org in Haiti and Givelove.org around the world as well as urine treatment and conversion methods used by companies like wasted.earth.

We would like to see sanctioned municipal level trial projects approved with exceptions to the current regulations so that immediate access to dry ‘bucket’ toilets could be provided to New Mexicans currently living unsheltered, or otherwise without access to drinking quality water 'flush toilets', to mitigate the current and pending public health and financial crisis posed by the number of unsheltered New Mexicans currently defecating outdoors. A pilot project with this exception would also need to include use of a piece of city, county, or state land where the trial compost piles could be implemented, with moisture levels & temperatures maintained and documented in a controlled environment. Our ideal end result would be direct soil application after appropriate processing and compost product testing has taken place.

While the urgent need for a pilot project using dry toilets and composting bins or piles is directly related to immediate public health concerns, we see the need for regulators and lawmakers to consider the potential impacts of climate shifts on New Mexico’s ability to produce it’s own food, and the currently lacking amount of fresh clean water for agricultural use.
