Good morning MISPers,

With all the talk of out-sourcing of state production contracts lately, I wanted to share an example of a state agency in-sourcing a project.

The Governor has just unveiled the new Department of Transportation ENDWI campaign created by Vaughn, Wedeen, Kuhn.  This is a departure from the old "You Drink, You Drive You Lose" concept moving more towards a results driven call to "End DWI."

Anyway, after almost two months of keeping the spot under wraps we can finally share "The End".  It is a broadcast spot that halflife* digital was hired to produce by VWK.

It was created for a New Mexico Agency using 100% New Mexico talent both above and below the line.   I'm incredibly proud to have been the director on this spot and our local union crew did an amazing job with an ambitious shooting schedule with lots of locations.

VWK is a joy to work with.  They were incredibly supportive and welcoming of our creative input and it made for a great collaboration. They are a world class agency and they definitely get that there is world class talent here.  Thanks VWK and thanks NMDOT.

You can see the spot on the halflife* Facebook page.

Cheers and keep up the good work.

Thanks David, great work. Interestingly enough you shot this the same day as the same department brought in an LA non union
company to shoot another spot. The difference was the agencies. Well the proof is in the pudding and here we have a fine
commercial shot by and with New Mexicans because after all its for them and its there money. Hopefully this will be the norm
going forward. Some day I will relate the "You Drink etc " story.

Public service message for “free lance creatives”:

When submitting a public service message idea to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, please follow these simple guidelines: DON’T DO IT!!!

Take it from me, a guy with a fairly good public record of creative work (including the VERY long-running “Toss No Mas” jingle.  I submitted an idea which arguably, years later, resulted in the popular NMDOT “Don’t Text” video,  “DNTXT: Deadly Conversation”.  (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwta1bxyLGw

When I made the Department aware of my earlier submission, and gently suggested they pay me what I had requested as a creative fee in the first place, they politely declined, based on technicalities**, while not actually denying that my idea may have likely resulted in the current campaign.

This is the highly principled, morality-in-government, “do the right thing” Martinez administration, by the way. So, until further notice, and until they decide to do the right thing, my suggested guideline for  submitting ideas remains: DON’T DO IT!

        - Jim Terr 2014

** and asking ME – legal expert that I am not – if I can let them know of any statutes contradicting the technicality they cited!!
