Could they have found a worse picture of me?
I have to work with some PR people to get better head shots but I’m pleasantly surprised
to find myself on the front page
of the Journal above the fold, not for
something I allegedly did but something the State most definitely transgressed.
I realize I’m on a kick to push NM production companies, directors, and DP’s but I honestly believe
this is the future of our
business both in the commercial and feature world. It’s
probably not appropriate for me to so but if anyone out there feels
like
helping me by writing to the Journal pointing out they have the expertise
required to shoot this commercial that would be
great . This story will die if
there is an impression that I’m a one man band. I was there, there was nothing
in this spot that
couldn’t have been accomplished by at least ½ a dozen of our
NM directors and DP’s.
Since most of the heavy lifting was done by Brent Morris
there was no reason to bring in an outside producer. BTW Brent’s
Indie
Productions was very helpful on this spot in protecting the rights of New Mexican’s.
He’s not only a valuable asset to the
motion picture production community but
also for commercials too. Good on ya Brent.

The contract is with Vaughn/Wedeen of Albuquerque and has been for a number of years. We had a separate production RFP contract with NMDOT for three years in ’07-’10 and it was all local players back then. Don’t know the director on this last round.

Public service message for “free lance creatives”
When submitting a public service message idea to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, please follow these simple guidelines: DON’T DO IT!!!
Take it from me, a guy with a fairly good public record of creative work (including the VERY long-running “Toss No Mas” jingle): I submitted an idea which arguably, years later, resulted in the popular NMDOT “Don’t Text” video, “DNTXT: Deadly Conversation”. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwta1bxyLGw)
When I made the Department aware of my earlier submission, and gently suggested they pay me what I had requested as a creative fee in the first place, they politely declined, based on technicalities**, while not actually denying that my idea may have likely resulted in the current campaign.
This is the highly principled, morality-in-government, “do the right thing” Martinez administration, by the way. So, until further notice, and until they decide to do the right thing, my suggested guideline for submitting ideas remains: DON’T DO IT!

** and asking ME – legal expert that I am not – if I can let them know of any statutes contradicting the technicality they cited!!
