One thing mentioned in Tuesday's  NLUG meeting:  possible future online community (and our former Meetup hijack).  Howard mentioned "somebody" running a NLUG server.  (With sysadmin guidance) I may be able to help there .. maybe by paying for an online Linode machine .. just a thought for now.

"somebody" posted:  10 Facebook Alternatives:  1. Minds, 2. diaspora, 3. Mastodon, 4. Gab, 5. Friendica, 6. Hubzilla, 7. Aether, 8. LBRY, 9. KARMA, 10. Signal

... of which said alternatives, Mastodon was the subject of further discussion.

I'll go ahead and mention Element .. The host of AskNoahShow tech podcast, Noah Chelliah told me at the 2022 Southeast Linux Fest about Element.io having an active tech community.  I just signed up for my Element account .. details at 11.

And, also at the 2022 Southeast Linux Fest, one presentation track was Jason (Gitlab) Plum's Kubernetes intro .. Jason is the organizer of the Lancaster PA LUG which seems to meet online on the 3rd Thursday of the month 6pmCST (7pmET).  Below is the meetup info for anyone interested.

By the time you have the server running in the cloud, you might as well install from each of the distributions' own servers.  The point of having a local Installfest server is that 1) you need less networking to get it set up, and 2) all of the bandwidth you need is in the room.  If you're trying to run 20 installs at once, your data pipe *might* get a bit slow.

We aren't back in the days when Howard assigned static IPs with stickers and no (or a very slow) uplink, but still, if you're running a bunch of installs at once, you want either most of the packages to be installed locally, or you want a good proxy server in the room that ensures that each of those packages is only downloaded over the pipe once during the Installfest, improving the available bandwidth for other users in the room.

Hi Michael,
Rather than paying for Linode, we should have access to some local hardware soon. This would be a great opportunity to give guys like you an opportunity to learn some server administration and help us in the process.
This can be an ongoing topic. I've mentioned in the past, I'd like to replace some of the proprietary tools we use (Google Groups, Zoom, Slack) with some open-source alternatives we host ourselves.
Jitsi could replace zoom and Slack.
Anyone have experience with mail servers and mailing lists where we could replace this Google Group?
We can also explore other services such as Mastodon.

I have a couple servers available with 64GB RAM .. model# & details at 11, unless Howard cares to provide said details sooner.
