I better go ahead and ask if anyone has used Remmina or FreeRDP or other program to remote connect from Linux / Ubuntu (in this case Kubuntu) to a Win10pc.

I'm testing trying to get this to work from my Ubuntu laptop (on location via LAN) first before going to remote site.

OR- can / should I virtualize said Win10pc to run it on Linux and remote connect Linux to Linux?

I'd pay for someone to do it if you can.  It would keep me from having to set up Windows machine, which is the last thing I want to do.
Thanks

If it's not working, my normal suspicion would be that the associated
service is not running. It has to be listening on the remote PC for
you to connect that way.

The details of the environment are necessary to determine my
recommendation on connecting (you will need local access to install
anything, anyway). If you're on the public network, I'd want you to
be using either something that includes encryption or which runs over
an encrypted tunnel. However, if you're already on a VPN, then
something like TightVNC would be sufficient.

Yes, on VPN.  We used TightVNC before via LAN; if it works remotely via VPN, that works for me.  I would probably be wise to enable TightVNC and other protocols in addition to RDP.  We had this working remotely on VPN via RDP from Win7 to Win7, but Win7 client location is now Kubuntu18.04 and Win7 (server) location to connect into is now Win10.

As of right now Howard can make it here tomorrow morning.  Thank God for NLUG.

Another possible issue might be that during the upgrade to Windows 10,
the Windows Firewall was activated. This might mean that the service
could still be running, but is blocked by policy. It still would need
to be verified locally.

That prompted me to check Windows Defender where I found "Candy Crush Friends" enabled by default.  I'll be trying connecting via VNC later.
Vielen Dank

As I only have Linux on my main laptop for a good while now (and I only have Win10 on my 2 gen older laptop), and I do contract work to Windows systems, I RDP with Remmina. It works for me. One thing though is that the appearance of the Win desktop is not as nice as with a native RDP client: the fonts are not anti-aliased, they look thinner, it's just shittier, but I put up with that.

I've used Remmina to connect from my Debian based machines to my Windows machines at home.  However, the Win10 machines I have are Windows 10 Pro, and I do not believe you can use RDP to connect to a machine running Windows 10 Home.  If you are able to go into the Windows 10 pro machine and get into the Control Panel, then allow remote access from within and disable NLA, you should then be able to remote into the Windows 10 pro machine using its IP address if they are both on the same LAN.  Note: you will need to use a user account that has remote access.  You can set this up in Computer Management, select Users & Groups, then add the account you want to use in the "Remote Desktop Users" group.

I hope that helps.  If it's the case that I misunderstood your question, or if I've got the right direction but need to clarify something, feel free to let me know and I'll be happy to help if I can.

Thanks,
Adam H.

Quick feedback as to what was discovered with Michael this morning
regarding RDP and Remmina. We took a three step approach to the situation:

Make Windows to Windows work
Make linux Remmina to Windows work
Add a VPN link

The instructions from M$ on how to address the Windows RDP target are a
bit confusing. They try to introduce some crazy naming stuff into the
equation. Just connect to the IP address and enter the user name as it
is on the local login screen. At least today, domain didn't matter; we
left it blank.

The other less than intuitive item was "quick connect" in Remmina; as in
it doesn't work. Bug reports exist and so on. Get to the proper
configuration screen and set up a named connection and it works.

I was caught a bit flat-footed by the fact that Remmina has had upgrades
since Ubuntu 16.04. That took some time to navigate.

Hope that expands our knowledge base.

Howard,

Kudos for updating us with the solution that worked.

I'd hate to imagine some poor schmuck running across this thread in
the future, but instead, it ends with "Nevermind- I solved it!"

And as always, thanks to everyone who chimed in with suggestions.

Thanks,
-Jonathan (frequently that schmuck)

Switching over the 76 year old (boss's wife) to a new Linux system from Win7 was what I dreaded most - so far it's seemed to be no problem at all and Win10 won't be needed there 😁.

Because NLUG (Howard) turned me on to Clonezilla I was able to upgrade our Win8 to Win10, clone the Win10 in case ever needed then erase it to install Linux.  For anyone (not familiar with Clonezilla) needing to upgrade older Win to Win10, I highly recommend Clonezilla before and after upgrading.

Many thanks for everyone's input.
