I would like to trash it, but not an option.  The disk drive is sick and I am putting another drive on order.
Does anyone have experience using VISTA Ultimate features that is supposed to allow moving the system to a new drive?
TIA,

Why not boot knoppix linux LiveCD with the sick disk and a new disk (same size or larger) and then use the dd_rescue util (under Knoppix) to clone the sick disk to the new disk.  Use the –A option to work past bad spots (with zero-fill in the respective target sectors on the new disk – you will have to chkdsk /r c: afterwards – you should do this anyways).

This works as I have done with my vista ultimate more than once when playing with upgrade options for win7 ultimate RC.

Oh yeah, once you clone to the new disk, if that new disk is larger, Disk Management should allow you to expand the NTFS volume out to the full size of the new disk.

You can also do this with Fedora 8+ LiveCD but you have to be attached to the Internet and do a ‘yum install dd_rescue’ first to install the utility.

To be more to the point you were asking about :-), this is what you seek I think:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/easy-transfer.aspx

for Windows Vista+

This works too BUT you can clone the disk with dd_rescue and save the hassle of resinstalling and restoring the backup image the above tool creates.  The cloned disk with dd_rescue clones Boot track and all.  It should boot right up as if it were the original sick disk.  It’s up to you.  :-)

Also.  Even though the page references a “transfer cable”, I stored the image to an external USB disk.  You could probably store to a 2nd data volume on the sick system (as that would be fast transfer rate than USB 2 even most likely).
