My problem does not originate with Rocky but with the upstream provider,
RedHat. Have done a preliminary install of RL8.6 and finally remembered
how to get networking to run by default; why RedHat, why? Now, I cannot
curl or dnf (which uses curl) due to certificate silliness.

I have chased a number of suggestions but am still thwarted. If I don't
get a curl 60 error, I get a 403 Forbidden error.

Anybody else been down this rat hole?

There's a reason I call Red Hat Microsoft Jr.

RHEL has to be registered through rhsm to their site or a local
Satellite server.

subscription-manger status will show you if that was successful. or
not.  (And, since you're getting the 403 forbidden I'd say it's not
registered)

if you have subs, and an account with them, it's easy peasy, but if not
you're better off going with a clone.

FWIW, you can get a developer subscription for free. It's good for setting up a handful of (3, maybe) machines.

Brian,

My application involves production servers; beyond the license terms of
the developer subscription. The subscription fee is only part of the
total cost. The operational hoops of working with subscriptions are
excessive.

Count me as one who has lost all respect for RedHat and what they did
with CentOS. I am not naive; I know how RedHat and IBM operate. The
squeeze of small software developers is on and RedHat is leading the way.

Gotcha. Well, there is always RockyLinux, as an alternative. And, IIRC, there is another distro trying to fill the vacuum (but I don't remember the name).

Brian,

That is what I am trying to install - Rocky 8.6. Now installed, dnf
does not allow me to update the OS due to a certificate issue.

I am on the record saying, both internally (I am a Red Hat employee) and externally to my customers, that our entitlement process is actively user hostile. Fortunately we are addressing that and with Simple Content Access there is no need for most customers to manage entitlements any more. User subscription-manager to register the host and patch away. You can do that as part of the kickstart process.

If that is a road too far, having a single registered host and using that to maintain a local mirror of our content is simple too.

What does the Red Hat registration process have to do with Rocky? Blame Rocky for Rocky problems.

Kent,

Fair comment. Frustrating to say the least. I am quite sure I
overlooked a simple step that now prevents me from moving forward. I am
one day into the whirlwind search for an answer which is proving elusive.

That's not beyond the license terms. They say that you can use the
developer license on up to 16 machines, which include "small
production servers". They don't exactly specify what "small" means in
this regard:

"The use cases for Red Hat Enterprise Linux have been expanded in the
Red Hat Developer Subscription for Individuals. The Red Hat Developer
Subscription for Individuals is a single subscription, which allows
the user to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux on a maximum of 16
systems, physical or virtual, regardless of system facts and size.
Those 16 nodes may be used by the individual developer for demos,
prototyping, QA, small production uses, and cloud access."

The frustrating part is that they require you to re-register your
system once a year, and if you don't, updates fail with a cryptic
message.

Let me ask about Alma Linux. It's supposedly a CentOS replacement.

Many thanks to all for your comments regarding my plight. As expected,
"the problem" was self inflicted by my own lack of practice installing
RedHat style operating systems. Specifically, there is a slider thingy
in the upper right hand corner of one of the install screens to enable
networking from the beginning. If my experience says anything, slide
that to ON!

Sorry to bother everyone with such a silly mistake.

I'll go ahead and say again:  thanks to NLUG for getting to be on this email list, I get to learn priceless IT skills that I have no idea where else I would learn.

I first attended NLUG in 2013, then finally in 2018 Howard helped get me started actually using Linux .. 4 years later we've saved $68,000 .. and now beginning our 5th year we can add another $85,000 in savings to that with TrueNAS Scale, also installed by an NLUG contact, the presenter of the January meetup, Greg Cooper.

Those dollar figures are based on prices I got quoted from Syscom Technologies and other consultants and vendors, all of which counted on me not knowing Linux.

Maybe this will be another email thread on TrueNAS Scale and since we thankfully have the Zoom meetups recorded, maybe some of you will want to watch the January recording.

Oh! That f***ing thing! That slider (and it's default setting) is the worst feature of their os.

Why would you want networking on by default? 🤣 Ugh! Silly settings!

Maybe if you are an operator at the secret uranium enrichment plant in Nathanz Iran and you want an air gap for fortification, then you don't want networking (even in that case the Stuxnet / Olympic Games will jump the air gap, but that's another story). In any other case you want networking. I'm all for security by default, but I think in this case the default off is silly.

Does this also mean a re-install once per year? Or do you get to keep
going with the same install once you re-register?

No need to re-install.

If you install via a network install method the setting defaults to on
otherwise it defaults to off.
