Long ago (maybe around 2010) I used a program called Aid4Mail to download and archive emails, and it stored them in some sort of database for easy searching if I needed to find something. (And it was Windows only.) Now I need a similar product, and I just found out Aid4Mail went to annual licenses like 2013 and is now only targeting business/enterprise customers (and it was Windows only).

The primary goal is just to download selected emails and store them in a searchable format, in case I ever need to retrieve one in the future. I suppose at a basic level, I could just use Thunderbird, though it doesn't have any compression features.

Any thoughts?

Paul

If you have SMTP access to your mail, you can use isync/mbsync on a *nix box to get an archive.

Configuration is pretty easy, but here's my config for reference: https://git.beepboop.systems/stupidcomputer/dot_testing/src/branch/master/config/isync/config

Your emails are saved as plain text, so you can grep to your heart's content. If you want more advanced searching you can use notmuch -- but I haven't tried configuring it.
