Sentiment analysis

I am trying to understand sentiments of individual sentences/phrases of a particular corpus. I am new to nlp, however I have a lot of experience in machine learning.
Can I get some suggestions/papers to start with. Is there a sentiment classifier in nltk?

I have also been looking into sentiwordnet where certain words have a sentiment score. How good is sentiwordnet? Can I create a custom sentiwordnet based on my corpus?
