Hi Steven,

There was a lack of activity for a long time, but maybe we could continue the discussion about the Russian translation of NLTK Book? You wrote:

I authorise a translation into Russian with the same CC license as the English translation, subject to: (1) it being made available via nltk.org, (2) an agreed arrangement for quality control (eg can we jointly arrange for people to read it and give feedback, esp on choice of terminology), and (3) an agreement about how to incorporate examples in Russian without affecting the authorship of the text (ie your roles are as editors not authors). This last point shouldn't be onerous - happy to discuss via email or voice call after 15 October.

1) What do you think about creating https://github.com/nltk/nltk_book_rus repository or a "russian-translation" branch at https://github.com/nltk/nltk_book?
2) I think that Dr. Alexander Gelbukh  (www.gelbukh.com) and another professor from Laboratory of Natutal Language and Text Processing in the Center for
Computing Research of Instituto Politécnico Nacional, México, Dr. Grigori Sidorov (www.cic.ipn.mx/~sidorov/) have agreed to revise the resulting translation; Alisa is in contact with them and maybe she has something to say so I CCed this email to @nltk-russian google group where the translation process is organized.
3) I think we'd be happy to accept these terms; this email is CCed to @nltk-russian group so translators can express their opinions.

Hi Mikhail,

Thanks for re-starting this discussion. I'm glad that the participants are happy to use GitHub, and I've set up a repository nltk_book_rus, and given you privileges there. I'm glad to hear you have some readers lined up, and I will try to find some more.

The point about Russian examples needs some explanation. It might be tempting to replace the English examples in the book with Russian examples. In some cases (e.g. tokenisation), this would be almost trivial, but in others (e.g. syntax and semantics), it would be almost impossible. In the latter case, it would require significant updates to the surrounding text. This would no longer be a translation, but a re-write. Instead, following the pattern of the Japanese translation, I recommend leaving the examples in English, and then adding a chapter at the end, with a different authorship to the book, which focusses on Russian. I hope this makes sense. I'd like to have further discussion about how to develop that chapter to maximise its usefulness to people who are applying NLP to Russian. Also, I'd like to consider any corpora and corpus readers that we can add to NLTK, for better support of Russian.

sudo apt-get install python-sphinx
Здесь есть инструкции для разных систем: http://sphinx-doc.org/install.html

А затем создаю папку для HTML-файлов и генерирую книгу:
mkdir html_version
sphinx-build -a -b html . html_version

Hello everybody!

The thread is quite old now. Please, let me know about the progress in russian translation of the book. I have just finished translation of the book from here: http://www.nltk.org/book/ with the google translate.google.com/toolkit for personal use. It is just "discussions" translation without appropriate russian examples and without translation of exercises and with loose translation of notions. Is anyone still interested in the russian translation?

Yours faithfully,
Igor Tolstonozhenko

Hi Igor,

Thanks for the news about your work on the Russian translation. I would be happy for it to be hosted on the NLTK website, and to create a repository where you and others can gradually improve it (e.g. using Russian examples, Russian stemmer, and so forth, instead of English).

Hi Steven,

Thank you very much! I am happy to share my work with others and improve it together gradually. Actually this translation still needs a lot of work to be good enough. Attached is an archive with the translation. I could also add anyone interested to the list of editors of the translation at http://translate.google.com/toolkit.

I listed typos I found during the translation here: https://github.com/nltk/nltk_book/issues/187

Dear Steven, friends,

I am back to the translation of the book into Russian. As I am trying to refine the quality, I would like to know could we really create a repository to gradually improve the translation and make it finally a book? I am currently replacing English text with the refined Russian text in a PDF file to get something reader friendly but building a book from the repository could be a better option. I am looking forward to any suggestions, instructions for creating the repository.

Yours faithfully,
Igor Tolstonozhenko
