Hey all,

Taking into account the rather low turn-out for yesterday's class,
we've decided to re-take it before the end of the trimester. As I have
a prohibitively busy schedule over the next fortnight, Raag (III) has
kindly agreed to take the class.

Please respond to this post stating when you'd like to have the class
over the next ten days or so.

The class will be divided into two parts: the first, dealing with
custom (what was covered yesterday); and second, dealing with other
sources of international law (treaties, GPIL, national judicial
decisions, considerations of equity etc.). For those who attended
yesterday, you're free to attend both parts if you'd like a recap of
custom (it is indeed a complex subject!), or only the second part.

If you intend to pursue these discussions seriously over the course of
this year, I would strongly recommend that you attend this class on
sources. Over the next trimester, our discussions on Kosovo, targeted
killings etc. will involve reliance upon a number of arguments based
upon custom, treaties, GPILs etc. A thorough understanding of any
controversy in international law is hardly possible without a strong
grasp of custom.

Over to Raag.

Yes, please. Missed the last one; I'd like another in the next ten days.

Geetha.

So professional Bhatia! I feel all important. Damn.

First of all, can everyone who intends to attend the next session tell me? If there are too few, no point.

Second, the class will not be longer than one hour. After that, if people want to discuss further - that's open. But one hour is all I'll take - everyone has other work, and we want as many people to come as possible.

Finally,. I'm not going to prescribe any 'readings' apart from one ten page summary. I'll try and explain everything in the one hour I have.

But I will give out a list of things you should read at some point in time if you're interested. This because as much as I can talk, IL simply cannot be understood that way, unlike say something like contract or tort. It's vague, it's ambigious, it's openly tailored to interests (and consequently brilliant) - and you need someone much more qualified than me to put it into words.

Basically, I'll try and do an 'IL for the Uninitiated' so that you can start reading independently without being constrained by lack of a basic understanding. There are more open ended questions in IL than perhaps any other area of the law. I'll refer to them as we go along, raise questions, draw attention to some evergreen debates. But primarily, the point is to run through the basics.

Tell me if there's any specific you'd like to discuss.

Cheers,
Raag

Hello,

Long time.

Thanks for replying. Bhatia's managed to convince me there are 'loads of interested people who haven't got the time to reply to the mail'. Thin line between optimism and law school apathy to academics after 1.30. But hopefully he's right. Irrespective, come!

Acha. Moving on. Is 22nd evening good for everyone?

As for the promised ten page summary. It's a hard copy of articles (the one's I strongly suggest you read in original) summarized by my seventh years as part of their curriculum. The part on sources of IL is eleven pages, while the entire thing (the whole of international law!), divided into eight modules, is 46 pages.

I'm going to leave a copy at Swati tomorrow. Ask for the 'IL group reading'.

Reply soon.

Cheers,
Raag

The 22nd it is. Also, as an aside, you may not find too  many interested people but even if you find a few interested ones, should be fine nay? Anyway, your call. :)

Hello!

Since we'd all forgotten to specify time for the class, it's been postponed to 9.30 pm tomorrow night somewhere in the acad. Please do turn up.

Geetha.

PS - The summaries are at Swati, as Raag promised.
