Hey everyone,
Here's a reminder that the last date to apply for the debates offered last week (see the forwarded message below) is April 12th, 8 pm. We'd also like to fill in a few details that were missing in the previous mail (including flight costs). Please read through carefully.
First, while the slots for SMU Hammers and Australs are filling up (with only 2 slots left for SMU), we haven't received any applications yet for UADC or for INDC.
We assure you that we are actively trying for subsidies for all international tournaments, and we are quite certain of receiving them. We are expending all effort to ensure that the subsidies result in minimal expenditure for participants; the rest is up to the administration. The final amount will be intimated at a later date.
No subsidies will be taken for INDC since the prize money for winners is INR 45,000 and for runners up is INR 30,000. No international tournaments offer prize money.
Second, as a UADC prep tournament, SMU Hammers sees some very good participation from top debaters and has a Novice Break. There aren't any main socials events as such, the focus of this 3 day event is on the debate. If UADC isn't possible for you, this is a a good, short tournament to consider.
Importantly, for all those who've applied/will be applying for SMU,
please send a mail mentioning whether you will be requiring accommodation as the registration fee is exclusive of accommodation, and hence we need to let the organizers know in advance about booking hotels. As such, reasonable no-frills accommodation near the SMU campus can be found at

Third, the Australasian Championship is a rare opportunity to go as a sizable contingent since they've usually been held in Australia and New Zealand. This is one of largest debate tournaments in the world and extremely competitive - the level of debate is very high. It is also the only tournament where teams come from all over the Asia-Pacific region. Further, it's in the 3rd week of July and is thus very conveniently timed.
Admittedly, the Australs format is a more intensive 3-on-3 format and deviates from the Asians format we are used to, but any Championship tournament will naturally require loads of practice.
Fourth, while we understand that the timing and location for UADC could be more convenient, it is after all the Asian Championship. We've made semi-finals in the recent past and with the stunning performance of Anil and Basu (III Year) as ABP runners up, it would be ideal if we continue making a mark at the continental level.
Further, as co-hosts of the World Universities Debating Championship 2014, Chennai, to not be represented at the largest debate in the Asian region - one where we used to send 4-5 teams on a regular basis till 2 years ago - is a little unbecoming.
It's a great opportunity to see argumentation significantly higher than the average Indian standard and interact with people from dozens of nationalities. Do go to the links provided to find out more information about the tournament and consider going if you don't have attendance (or other) issues.
Fifth, the most reasonable flight costs are as follows -
Looking forward to a good response,
Best regards,
