Hey everyone,

We realize that Band 1 selections for Asians haven't been conducted yet, but be rest assured they'll happen soon after NLS Debate finishes on 2nd April. Offerings will follow immediately. In the mean time, we're just updating you on the tournaments that will be offered this trimester.

First, and most importantly, the biggest Asian debate of the year is just round the corner. The United Asian Debating Championship (UADC) is being held in Manila from 22 - 30 May. We've been allotted 2 teams and 2 adjudicators. The registration amount is around INR 16,000 per person, however there is a very strong possibility of the Vice-Chancellor granting a subsidy.

We've performed well at UADC in the past, and with the exemplary performance of Anil and Basu in making the Asian BP finals, it'd be great to cap off this year with a strong showing at the region's premier debate tournament.

Now, the last date for the payment of the registration deposit is this Saturday. Hence, we're currently taking a loan from the Vice-Chancellor for the deposit. However, if we don't have enough interest, there's no point in doing so since it'll cause future financial issues.
Please reply back to this mail by 21st March, 6 PM if you can be certain of going for UADC in the event that you are offered the tournament, so that we get an idea of the interest in the college and make arrangements accordingly.

Second, we've registered for Singapore Management University Hammers 2013 which is being held from 10 - 12 May at the SMU campus. It's a UADC prep tournament and has a team cap of 100 this year. It's a great tournament to go to, it isn't lengthy and it's great tournament to get to know the Asian circuit. Registration amount is just SGD 60, however accommodation costs aren't included in that.

Moreover, SMU Hammers has a junior/novice break as well as generous subsidies for outstation debaters. Do keep a look out for its offering.

Third, the Australasian Inter-Varsity Debating Championship (Australs) is happening in Kuala Lumpur from 14 - 22 July. We're usually unable to send a sizable contingent for Australs since it mostly happens in Australia/New Zealand. This is one of the rare times we can actually attend it in a good number considering that it's in the 3rd week of 1st trimester.

It's one of the the most prestigious tournaments in the world, and India has been quite unrepresented at it in the past. We've been allotted 2 teams and 1 adjudicator, however there's still a while to go for the registration payment and with regular Air Asia flights from Bangalore, flight costs aren't much either. While registration will amount to around INR 29,000, just like UADC, we're trying hard to get a subsidy for this as well.
The format is slightly different from the Asians format, but it remains essentially a 3-on-3 tournament. Further, do keep in mind that Australs has an affirmative action policy of requiring at least 1/3rd of the contingent to be women, and it's the only tournament where teams from all across the Asia-Pacific come together.

Details can be found at http://utmaraaustrals2013.com/ Do look out for the offering.
