Title: Building the Reddit World Map

Abstract: In the massive online worlds of social media, users frequently rely on organizing themselves around specific topics of interest to find and engage with like-minded people. However, navigating these massive worlds and finding topics of specific interest often proves difficult because the worlds are organized haphazardly, leaving users to find relevant interests by word of mouth or using a basic search feature. In this talk, I report on a method using the backbone of a network to create a map of the primary topics of interest in any social network. To demonstrate the method, I build an interest map for the social news web site Reddit and show how such a map could be used to navigate a social media world.

The peer-reviewed manuscript for this talk can be found here.

Bio: Randy is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania working with Prof. Jason H. Moore on artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in bioinformatics. Prior to coming to Penn, Randy spent 4 years working on his dual Ph.D. in Computer Science & Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Behavior (EEBB) with Prof. Chris Adami at Michigan State University, culminating in a Ph.D. thesis on the evolution of intelligent animal behavior. On the weekends, he has taken up a “data tinkering” hobby where he tackles a new data analysis problem every week and reports his findings on his popular data blog, where he is most recently known for creating the "Ultimate American Road Trip" and solving Where's Waldo?
