Should we restrict the openness of this group so that people have to
request to join?

My opinion is "not yet".

I've been a bit bothered by the spam but I think it is manageable at
this point and I think there are a lot of people that might want to
see this information without joining. That said, if the spam gets
much worse, I think we will have no choice. As far as I'm concerned,
it is borderline right now.

I just set the group to have messages from new members moderated -- hopefully that should help.
