Maastricht, May 23 - 28 - 2000
Maastricht, enjoy it!
In the very most southern point of the Netherlands, squeezed between Belgium
and Germany, the very flat lowland transforms into a lovely hilly landscape.
That is exactly the spot where the Romans, about 2000 years ago, decided to
settle themselves. They called it the Meuse Crossing or in Latin, Mosae
Trejectum.

In this place -Maastricht- 2000 years of history can be traced. History that
you feel in the air of the very old centre of the city with its narrow
streets paved with cobble stones and furnished with impressive facades.
Churches, treasuries and mansions are evidence of prosperity the city
experienced for many centuries. The remnants and the underground
fortifications are reflections of a turbulent and warlike past. Also the
bridge, that for centuries was the most important crossing over the river
Meuse, is till today a place of interest.

The sunniest city of the Netherlands is inviting you for a short vacation or
just for a weekend full of life. We, the citizens of Maastricht, would like
to share with you the monuments and the music, the culture and the cuisine,
the terraces and the boutiques...

Maastricht in the light of World Championship Sitting Volleyball for Women

Within some weeks Maastricht will host the World Championship Sitting
Volleyball for Women. From May 23 - May 28 this capital city of the province
of Limburg will be the center of this event and already since months many
volenteers have been very busy with the organization. The coming weeks all
final details will be worked out and the result of hard work will become
visible. Dozens of people are involved in the preparations and they are
dedicated to turn this event into a splendid success without any reward.

The teams

In the sports hall of Maastricht "De Heeg" eight teams of different
countries will be fighting for the honor during this World Championship.
They represent countries from all over the world stressing once again the
international aspect of this competition. They come from Japan, Iran,
Mongolia, Finland, Germany, Slovenia, Ukraine and the Netherlands. Japan,
Mongolia and Iran are participating for the first time and for the women of
Iran this will even be the first time that they will be competing abroad.
Last year in Sarajevo (Bosnia) the Dutch team managed to conquer the bronze
medal. In short, in the month of May Maastricht is looking forward to some
very important and interesting competitions in the area of the sitting
volleyball sports.

Support by many partners

The "Foundation Promotion Sports for the Handicapped" (Stichting Promotie
Gehandicaptensport Nederland-SPGN) is in charge of overall organization. The
committee of this establishment can once again rely on the participation of
many volunteers, clubs, governmental organizations and of sponsors. The SPGN
is supported amongst others by the World Organisation Volleyball for the
Disabled (WOVD), the Dutch Federation for Specially Designed Sports
(Nederlandse Bond voor Aangepaste Sporten-NEBAS), the Association of
Maastricht for Sports for the Disabled ( Maastrichtse vereniging voor
Gehandicaptensport-MGS Maastricht), the Craft-guild of Maastricht, The
province of Limburg and the city of Maastricht. Many volunteers, among which
dozens from the volleyball association "De Jokers" from Maastricht as well
as students from the Royal Military School (Koninklijke Militaire
School-KMS) from Weert are fully involved without receiving any
compensation.

About the "Foundation Promotion Sports for the Handicapped" (SPGN).

Already in the past has the SPGN organized several international events for
disabled athletes in a variety of sports. In 1999 it organized in Roermond
the European Campionships for Basketball in a wheelchair for Men en Women.
Many volunteers who participated in that event are now involved in
organizing the competition in Maastricht. The events organized by the SPGN
so far are amongst others the World Championships Goalball (1986), a clinic
for classified sportsmen in sitting volleyball (1995), twice the European
Cup Sitting Volleyball for Clubteams (1991 and 1995), a conference "Training
Managers and Coaching sitting volleyball for women" (1996) and a clinic
"Train the Trainers for Top Trainers" (1998). All these activities took
place in the city of Roermond. Co-initiator and organiser of these events is
Gene Savelkoul, director of SPGN and president of the European Committee
Volleyball for the Disabled (ECVD). Co-founder and chairman of SPGN is Hans
Janssen.

minder. World League finales in Nederland!"
