TENDAYI Westerhof, the outspoken former model and now estranged wife of
Clemens Westerhof, who once coached the Zimbabwe national soccer team,
yesterday revealed that she was HIV positive

Tendayi, who is expecting the couple's first baby anytime now, told The
Standard that she had for some time now, been living with the virus that
causes Aids and was coping well

She said she was coming out into the open now not to wring money out of the
ever growing donors involved in HIV/Aids issues but to encourage greater
openness in the society

"Many people are paying lip service to the disease. I feel If I go open I
can encourage other Zimbabweans to open up about their status," she said

Tendayi said she first became aware of her condition over a year ago when
her estranged husband called her from overseas to inform her that he had
tested positive for the HIV virus

Tendayi says she underwent a medical examination a day after her husband's
arrival and discovered that she too was HIV positive

"Clemens comforted me and told me that it was not the end of the world. He
also assured me that our marriage and love would not be at all affected by
the new developments," she said

Both Tendayi and Clemens have children from previous relationships and
Tendayi says she is not interested in knowing who gave the other the virus

"I am not saying Clemens gave me the virus nor am I saying I did the same to
him. I don't blame him for what we find ourselves in. I strongly think that
is not an issue," said Tendayi

Tendayi says she and Clemens had agreed that they would not have any
children together and that the pregnancy had "just happened accidentally."
"You see, when you are married, it is sometimes hard to avoid such a thing,"
she told The Standard

The couple's marriage has for long been on the rocks with Tendayi accusing
her husband of infidelity. Tendayi now resides with her children in
Marlborough while Westerhof, who denies any responsibility for the
pregnancy, is reportedly staying at the Vic Falls

Contacted for comment yesterday, Clemens denied being HIV positive

"That woman is a liar. She is desperate for me and my money. I don't want to
have anything to do with her. She can tell you whatever she wants but what I
know is that she wants me to be deported. Zimbabwe is a democratic country
and she should leave me in peace," said Clemens who had to be persuaded to
talk about the issue

Clemens is a renowned soccer coach who led Nigeria's 'Super Eagles' to
continental glory as African Champions in 1994 before taking them to the
World Cup second round phase at the finals held in the United States of
America

He also spent unsuccessful stints at South Africa's premier league side,
Mamelodi Sundowns and Zimbabwe's Warriors in 1999.
