DEHN Software: A Toolbox for Lightning and Surge Protection Planning
DEHN Software is a suite of software tools that helps electrical engineers, installers and electricians to plan and design lightning and surge protection systems for buildings and structures. DEHN Software consists of five modules that cover different aspects of the planning process, such as risk analysis, separation distance calculation, air-termination rod length calculation, earth electrode length calculation and surge protective device selection. DEHN Software is based on international and country-specific standards and regulations, and provides a clear and comprehensive plan with the appropriate products for each project.

In this article, we will introduce each module of DEHN Software and explain how they can make planning easier and more efficient.
DEHN Risk Tool: Evaluate the Potential Risk for Structures
The first step in planning a lightning and surge protection system is to evaluate the potential risk for the building or structure, taking into account its characteristics and purpose. DEHN Risk Tool helps you to create a risk analysis according to IEC 62305-2 or other country-specific standards. You can enter the parameters of the building or structure, such as dimensions, location, occupancy, contents, services and lightning protection measures. DEHN Risk Tool will then calculate the risk of loss due to lightning effects, such as direct strikes, flashes nearby, overvoltages or fire. Based on the risk assessment, DEHN Risk Tool will suggest the suitable class of lightning protection system (LPS) and a proposal for a complete protection concept, including the necessary shielding measures against lightning electromagnetic pulses (LEMP). You can also compare different scenarios and optimize your protection strategy.
DEHN Distance Tool: Calculate Separation Distances
The second step in planning a lightning and surge protection system is to calculate the separation distance between the components of the external LPS (such as air-termination systems, down conductors and earth-termination systems) and other conductive parts of the building or structure (such as metal roofs, pipes or cables). The separation distance is required to prevent dangerous sparking between the LPS and other conductive parts that could cause fire or damage. DEHN Distance Tool helps you to calculate the separation distance according to IEC 62305-3 using nodal analysis. You can choose from pre-defined building types or create your own custom building model. DEHN Distance Tool will then calculate the minimum separation distance for each node of the LPS and display it graphically. You can also adjust the parameters of the LPS, such as conductor material, cross-section or bonding method, and see how they affect the separation distance.
DEHN Air-Termination Tool: Calculate Length of Air-Termination Rods
The third step in planning a lightning and surge protection system is to calculate the length of air-termination rods that are used to create a protective zone around the building or structure. The length of air-termination rods depends on the class of LPS and the dimensions of the building or structure. DEHN Air-Termination Tool helps you to calculate the length of air-termination rods according to IEC 62305-3. You can enter the parameters of the building or structure, such as height, width, length and roof shape. DEHN Air-Termination Tool will then calculate the required length of air-termination rods for different classes of LPS and display them graphically. You can also see how changing the class of LPS affects the length of air-termination rods.
DEHN Earthing Tool: Calculate Length of Earth Electrodes
The fourth step in planning a lightning and surge protection system is to calculate the length of earth electrodes that are used to connect the LPS to the ground. The length of earth electrodes depends on the type of earth electrode (such as foundation earth electrode, ring earth electrode or earth rod), the class of LPS and the soil resistivity. DEHN Earthing Tool helps you to calculate the required length of earth electrodes according to IEC 62305-3. You can enter the parameters of the earth electrode, such as type, material, cross-section and number. DEHN Earthing Tool will then calculate the required length of earth electrodes for different classes of LPS and display them graphically. You can also see how changing the class of LPS affects the length of earth electrodes.
