Radio London RSL - 1997
Ray RobinsonJan 19 #81791
A couple of weeks ago, Herman from Ghent sent me a recording made in The Netherlands during the 1997 Radio London RSL. Back in October I added recordings from the 1999 RNI RSL to Azanorak, so this seems like a good opportunity to do the same for the 1997 Radio London RSL. I decided that, although Azanorak primarily focuses on archiving recordings of the offshore stations from 1958-1990, I will now also (re)post recordings from the RSL's of the 90's, recorded from good old medium wave in the days before the Internet webstreaming era began.
The 1997 Radio London RSL was organized by Ray Anderson (East Anglia Productions), and was broadcast on 266 metres, 1134 kHz, from the MV Yeoman Rose anchored in UK territorial waters of the North Sea about 1 mile off the Walton/Frinton beach. It began on Friday 18th July and ran until Thursday 14th August, commemorating, of course, 30 years since the implementation of the Marine, &c., Broadcasting (Offences) Act in 1967. Daily boat trips out to the Yeoman Rose were available for £7.50 from the end of Walton Pier.
Several offshore radio personalities from the 60's participated, including Pete Brady, Mark Roman, Dave Cash, Ian Damon, Keith Skues and Roger Day.
We have quite a lot of recordings from this RSL, so I'm not going to list them all here individually. There are 50 zip files, many containing multiple hours of programming. If you are interested, they are all contained in this folder:

If you have a MediaFire account and login, you should be able to download groups of files together. The whole folder is about 3.45 GB.
I will highlight just three of the files. The first is the one that Herman sent me, of Dave Cash:

This shows how well the low power transmitter was performing, putting a decent signal into The Netherlands!
The second is a 13 minute video that was shot two days before the end of the RSL, on Tuesday 12th August. It begins with the view of the Yeoman Rose from Walton Beach, and then shows the activity on board that afternoon, including parts of the Mark Roman show. There is not a computer in sight; they were using real records and a cart machine!

The third is the brochure produced to promote the broadcast, available here as a zipped pdf:

Thanks, Herman, for sending the recording and prompting me to do this!
Ray.
