I got asked this by Oprah Winfrey too, when Lisa and I were on her show. It was probably when Lisa and I were doing our last stand at Navy Pier in the Shakespeare Theatre. The flock of 100,000 zombie turkeys had broken the window and were coming in. I ran out of ammunition and was using my knife. I still marvel that we survived that.

I only had eyes for Lisa since I met her in high school. She kind of looks like Julia Roberts, only angry all the time. I never dated her or anything. I thought she was out of my league. Imagine how surprised I was when ten years later she proposed to me, right during the zombie turkey apocalypse.

A zombie wakes up without a name or memories and spends his days in conflict with his hunger for living flesh; over the course of more than a year he trains himself to move and speak like a human being and refrain from eating them. He takes on the identity of a Private Detective and struggles to make a living in the city of Gangrim, then teams up with local Intrepid Reporter Gong Seon-ji to solve mysteries and piece together his own past in the process.

What iZombie takes from Buffy, however, goes beyond witty dialogue. The two shows also have similar approaches to the undead. Zombies in the iZombie universe behave like vampires. They can mostly pass as human until they've gone too long without eating brains, at which point they become the zombies we know so well from Night of the Living Dead and its ilk.

This brings her into contact with a helpful police detective with the glorious name of "Clive Babinoux" (Malcolm Goodwin), who has his suspicions about Liv but is willing to go along with it because she gets results, even if it seems to take her a few false starts every episode before she manages to find the right perpetrator. (In this way, the show is like every detective show ever made.)

This is surprisingly similar to iZombie's main subplot, which involves zombie Blaine (David Anders, or as TV fans might know him, "Sark from Alias") setting up a business racket that involves turning people into zombies, then selling them the brains they need. And if those brains come with a huge markup, hey, business is business, right?

Kim Moo-Young (Choi Jin-Hyuk) has been a zombie for the past 2 years. To survive, he has mimicked the mannerisms of humans in a village. He then leaves for the city. There, Kim Moo-Young opens an office to work as a private detective. He does not remember anything before he became a zombie. He struggles to live with humans and to regain his past memory. Meanwhile, Kong Sun-Ji (Park Joo-Hyun) used to be a writer of a current affairs complaint program. A witness in a case, she was working on, was attacked by an unknown man. Due to that, she quit her job. She becomes involved with Kim Moo-Young and takes a part-time position at his private detective office.

After waking up in a dump site, our title character discovers he has turned into a zombie. With no memories of his past as part of the living, he spends a year in a rural town training himself to walk and talk like a normal human. Assuming the identity of detective Kim Moo Young, he heads to the big city where he meets Gong Seon Ji (Park Ju Hyun), a writer on an investigative current affairs program. Together they begin to solve crimes while searching for the truth behind his past and how he came to be a zombie.

The horror genre is a vast one, full of monsters, blood, and trauma, however one subgenre that continues to be successful is zombies, and Korea has an impressive list of the best zombie k-dramas and shows. The zombie genre is one that isn't too hard to decipher and is incredibly easy to watch. Essentially, zombie series and k-dramas take place in a world where some sort of virus or disaster has led to an outbreak of zombies, or more specifically, humans that have becoming walking corpses. Zombies come in a range of forms from creepy slow-walking creatures to ravenous monsters, however either way, any zombie k-drama is a good one.

South Korea has a handful of incredible zombie k-dramas that follow in the footsteps of the country's most iconic zombie movie, Train to Busan. These k-dramas take the zombie genre and turn it on its various different sides, exploring unique groups, scenarios, and even different time periods. Despite their distinctions though, all of these zombie k-dramas have commonalities that make them great. The best k-drama zombie shows of all time delve into themes of survival, humanity, and lasting relationships within unprecedented times. They bring the gore and violence, but they also bring love, friendship, and strength.

2021's Dark Hole subverts the typical zombie genre by throwing a mysterious and lethal sinkhole into the mix. Dark Hole takes place in a city where a cavernous sinkhole has opened up and has begun spewing a strange smoke. As it turns out, the smoke isn't as innocuous as it first seems, and in fact, inhaling it can infect humans with an indescribable virus that turns them into monsters. The series then follows a group of survivors that not only must save their lives from the smoke and their violent zombie peers, but also must figure out how to shut down the sinkhole before it hurts anyone else.

Dark Hole isn't basic when it comes to the zombie genre. Really, it stands out for its unique concept and execution of a well-loved trope. However, that doesn't mean that the series strays too far from what audiences love about zombie series. Dark Hole includes plenty of the same zombie tropes that viewers know and love including intense chase sequences, scientific mysteries, and gross-looking zombie characters. If anything, Dark Hole goes above and beyond the zombie genre in order to make it scarier, and somehow, even more dangerous.
