More processor fireworks
Elsewhere at the show, some interesting news about the G4
processor emerged from a Friday seminar that featured Roger Kasten from
Newer Technology, Toshio Nakajima from Interware (Vimage), and
Shinich Akazawa from the PowerPC division of IBM Japan. Mr.
Kasten demonstrated a 400-MHz G4 upgrade card installed in a
Power Mac G3. The upgraded Power Mac seemed stable and ready
to ship. (Mr. Kasten didn't address the recent controversy
surrounding apparent G3-to-G4 upgrade barriers among some Power Mac
G3 systems.) IBM's Mr. Akazawa created a buzz with the
announcement that a 700-MHz G3 chip based on SOI technology would be
released this year. Meanwhile, Interware's Mr. Nakajima showed
a road map of his company's product line and said the company plans
to release 1-GHz G4 upgrades by the end of 2000 and will offer
a G4 upgrade card for the iMac.

Klinkt veelbelovend. Was het niet Anson Ringenoldus die een paar maanden
geleden ook zoiets aankondigde?

En we kunnen komende week al de 600 Mhz. G3 van IBM verwachten.
Wat ik heb gehoord is dat de releasedatum voor de eerste batch rond eind
augustus ligt.
Maar als de yield zo hoog blijft als nu kan het best wel eens wezen dat ze
eerder op 1 Ghz komen te zitten.

Maar hoe zit 't nou precies met die softwarematige blokkade van Apple?
