This documented is intended to act as a guideline for newsadmins
who want to add the nl-alt.* hierarchy to their newsservers. It
describes the procedure for INN; users of other software should
however be able to figure things out from this document too.
0. Announcement
- ---------------
On 1 or 2 september newgroup control messages will be sent for
the proposed administrative groups in the nl-alt hierarchy by
<nl-alt-...@surfer.xs4all.nl>.
1. Who maintains the nl-alt hierarchy?
- --------------------------------------
No-one does. As the alt hierarchy, everyone is free to newgroup,
as long as they follow the guidelines. These guidelines are being
posted regularly to nl-alt.config.admin. They consist of some minimum
requirements for group creation, which includes discussion in
nl-alt.config.newsgroups. There are also guidelines for group removal,
and lots of other technical issues.
2. How do I configure my newssite for the nl-alt hierarchy?

When using INN, add the folowing lines to control.ctl:

This means that all newgroup messages will automatically be
hounored, and that rmgroup messages will be mailed to you for
approval unless they originate from a trusted source.
Users of other newssoftware should be able to configure that
software in a way like this.
If you do not trust newgroups from anyone, you could use these
trusted sources as well. Booster newgroups will be sent out
for newly created groups from these trusted sources. Just add:

Ik had deze FAQ geschreven, eerst voor gebruik zonder PGPverify.
Daarna met. De laatste versie is kennelijk niet tot Onno
doorgedrongen; hij heeft het nodig gevonden zelf de FAQ (verkeerd) te
bewerken. Zodra ik op mijn "homelocation" arriveer, zal ik de correcte
versie posten.
Tot die tijd wil ik iedereen verzoeken deze FAQ te negeren en ook de
PGP key niet te gebruiken.

newgroup, and rmgroups will be mailed to you for approval, unless they
originate from a trusted source. In the latter case, they will be
pgpverified.

Two of the above configurations use pgpverify, a program to
verify control messages using, surprisingly, PGP. We advise
every newsadmin to use pgpverify. More information can be
