Good afternoon fellow NJ rec. professionals,

At Centenary College are program is continuing to grow, all the way to the point where we have alumni coming back and guests of fellow students that want to watch our IM basketball league. Right now our administrators have a no guest tolerance policy for all student and intramural activities. I am reaching out to you all to find out what kind of policies you have in place for allowing guests to come watch games as well as the benefits to letting guests come out and watch.

I have created a policy which I have attached if you would like to review to see if we could add or revise anything to help encourage our administrators to allow guests as spectators to our IM sports held in the gym.

All your thoughts or policies you could share would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Hi Kevin
Sorry to hear about your guest issues.

Here at the Rec Center of William Paterson University our policy is faculty, staff, students, and members are allowed to have one guest per day.  If any of them are participating in our Intramural programs they are allowed to have one guest.  All guest are subjected the policy and procedures of the building.  You can review our policy & procedures on our website @ ww2.wpunj.edu (click on Athletics then Intramurals then Policy & Procedures).

I personally think allowing your Intramural participants one guest helps to promote your Intramural programs.   Students love to have their friends see them play.  Many times the guest are friends from home and there’s a good chance that they are not attending a college.  If they are enjoying their selves at your facility they will remember that should the opportunity presents itself for them to attend college.  So my point is there are many more benefits to allowing guest at your programs then there are problems.

Lastly, you can also use the guest fees as a fundraiser for your Intramural program. This can work with paying for your Intramural teams to attend state and regional tournaments.

Good Luck and give me a call if you want to discuss anything.
