Hi Friends,

Just a reminder that we'll be launching the findings of the first national study on the prevalence of child abuse, neglect, and trauma among children tried as adults next week! A brief presentation will be followed by a panel discussion featuring nationally renowned experts, including:

Yasmin Vafa, Executive Director, Rights4Girls
Brett Peterson, former Utah DYS Director
Dr. Liz Barnert, M.D., Pediatrician serving children in Los Angeles County
Michael Mendoza, National Criminal Justice Director, Latino Justice
Dr. Greg Van Rybroek, Director of the Mendota Treatment Center (Wisconsin)

The report has implications for the wider field, including defense attorneys, judges, advocates, service providers, and state officials working with system-involved youth. We hope folks can share the word and join us. Please see below for registration details.

Over the last 2 years HRFK has sent out nearly 20,000 surveys to people who were prosecuted as adults for crimes they committed as children to learn more about how Adverse Childhood Experiences and childhood trauma contributed to their incarceration.

The responses from more than 2,000 people indicated incredibly high rates of abuse, neglect, and exploitation, often from a young age, which resulted in child welfare and juvenile justice system involvement. Their stories represent not just a description of a national human rights crisis, but also serves as a call to recognize justice-involved youth as victims too.

During the ZOOM launch event, a brief presentation on the report's findings will be followed by a panel discussion of national experts. Participants will hear from advocates with lived experience and experts in the field of medicine, mental health, and law who will discuss the impact of severe trauma on brain and behavioral development, best practices for treating traumatized youth, as well as model policy recommendations.

Please make plans to join us on Thursday, November 20th at 2 PM ET, and forward to your friends and colleagues. Register today!
