All,
Here are the notes from today meeting:
Our focus will be telling the Boeing 777 story and relating it to the project management principals we have been learning this semester. The goal will be to elaborate on key points in the case study and to go in depth on the project management principal. Let's teach project management through this case study. We all agreed that more depth in each area is better than simply reporting back on the breadth of topics and points covered in the case.
Here are the refined parts that will make up the paper and presentation.
Jeff
Background Information - 3 Points to focus on
1. Background information on the airline industry and Boeing before the 777 project. Focus areas around Airbus and Boeing pre 777
2. The Business Case for the 777 - Why and What did they want to do
3. Goals and Scope of the project - And how that relates to Project Integration Management - Initiating, Develop Project Charter, Develop Preliminary Scope
Examples: Re-use design, flexible design, family of planes, wing flexibility and re-use pgs-91-92
Some areas that Jeff may look at is: Criteria for Boeing starting the project i.e. how many orders in hand, creating a handwritten contract, stakeholders involved in project etc...
Gus
Project Management Successes on the 777 Project
1. Project HR Management -> Human Resource Planning, Acquire Project Team, Develop Project Team, Manage Project Team
Examples of this in the case include: Small Teams, Cross-functional teams, DBT's, 3 way performance review pg 94-97
2. Project Quality Management->Quality Planning,Perform Quality Assurance, Perform Quality Control
Examples of this include: Digital Design w Catia, pg98, KPI Indicators pg.96, Inspectors, Bar Charts
3. Project Communications Management -> Communication Planning, Information Distribution, Performance Reporting, Managing Stakeholders
Examples of this Working Together, Muffin meetings, pg 87,97
Wayne
Project Management Problems - What went wrong, idea juxtapose what went right, suggestions to fix
1. Project Cost Management->Cost Control
Examples Catia system expenditures, performance problems, technical problems and it's effect on cost
2. Project HR Management -> Develop Project Team, Manage Project Team
Examples Catia 3D design system, New Management Structure, no training
3. Project Communication Management -> Information Distribution
Examples assembly line worker ideas did not bubble up past management as they should
Joe - (Work in Progress)
Analysis of the project - Something like.....the 777 Project overall was successful for Boeing cause they sold X airplanes, up from Y Airplanes
Focus in depth on 3 key points to drive home with facts, figures and charts. Below is the thread from last week:
From the last thread -
Joe - Analysis of findings let's interpret that to be the analysis of all
the figures in the case. Things like the chart on 101 come to mind. You
could focus on capturing all the data points, assembling them into
chart(s)....yes many please, then after that the analysis of those numbers.
What do the numbers mean to Boeing and how does that relate to project
management. Another example is on page 98 where it says, "goal to reduce
change errors bu 50%" outcome was 60 to 90%. That is a measure and part of
Quality Control.
So any figures that directly relate to project management and the success of
the project could be analyzed in depth.
Nandi - (Work in Progress)
Reuse of project management techniques or airline pieces from 777 like wings, management techniques both successes and failures. Same focus from last thread:
Nandi, I think your focus should be on the re-use of the positive points of
the case in other Boeing projects quoted in the case and any outside
research you can find. An example of this is on page 100 in the extending
the airbus revolution. I am sure there must be other examples of these
principles applied to other projects. This is going to be a tricky thing to
find. Key points here might be around the changes in communication stream
between assembly line workers, management and executives. Just thinking out
loud on that one. Or the "Muffin Meetings" the friendly weekly meeting. As
Gus and I flush out the positive aspects you can probably use that as a
basis to find more information.
Presentation Outline
Wayne drafter a presentation outline and the group discussed it and agreed to move forward. Wayne will discuss the outline with the professor 1 on 1 after class on Wednesday to get his buy in.
Action Points
Individual Team Members to begin elaboration on parts and to begin sharing with group through email
Team meeting time suggested to change to Wednesday after class
Wayne to share presentation outline with group
Wayne to meet with professor on Wednesday to discuss our concept for presentation ( Keeping it on the hush hush from other teams)
See you all in class on Wednesday.
