SKIN DEEP
Recent Work by Jim Goss

January 12, 2000 through March 18, 2000
Opening Reception: January 12, 2000 at 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

This exhibition of Jim Goss' recent work consists of 20 paintings on
birch panels and 9 gouache drawings. His visual style evokes a
Minimalist sensibility. Flatness, simplicity, and a humorous delight in
shapes are central to his work. There exists an ironic combination of
randomness (in the way they are composed) and control (in the way they
are executed). Mr. Goss puts it: "These pieces simultaneously embrace
and subtly subvert conventional elements of formalism. Despite the
obvious control, a certain crudity and random quality is allowed to
creep in."

Curator Alejandro Anreus is fascinated by the degree of control over the
rarely used flashe paint medium in Mr. Goss' paintings, which is a
medium used almost exclusively in creating signage. The range of colors
he uses, which includes such browns, yellows, pinks, and grays, subtly
refers to the colors of human skin. Round shapes made up of multiple
small dots are prevalent in Mr. Goss' work. They resemble what one sees
under a microscope. To a certain degree, they carry a lower body,
grotesque sensibility, which is ironically and interestingly treated on
a mostly matte, white, and cleansurface.

Mr. Goss received a BFA in painting from Hunter College, City University
of New York. His work has been represented in group exhibitions at the
Newark Museum; Aljira, A Center for Contemporary Art; and the
TransHudson Gallery. His work was previously shown at JCM in 1993 and
1995. Hecurrently resides in Hoboken.

The exhibition is curated by Alejandro Anreus, Ph.D. Funding for the
Jersey City Museum has been made possible in part by the City of Jersey
City; the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a
partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Skin seep
What is Skin seep?
Skin seep is a treatment firming of flabby and sagging skin. The technology developed by Sciton which are located in California, USA. More and more people choose non-surgical treatments to tighten the skin. The treatment uses infrared light that heats under the skin up to 4 millimeters down. Man heats when the collagen and protein in the skin that make the skin tightens up and initiates a repair process that leads to formation of collagen and other connective tissue proteins.
