Confidential Fire Chief Recruitment: Visalia Fire Department – Visalia, CA
The East Rutherford plant where a fire broke out Thursday was cited at least five times in the past six years for violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, according to government records obtained Friday by NJ Advance Media. Diamond Chemical Company, which is located on Union Avenue and Dubois Street off Route 17, was most recently cited for safety violations on May 28. The soap-and-detergent manufacturer was also cited on Feb. 8, Oct. 5, 2018, Jan. 1, 2014 and on Feb. 15, 2013, according to OSHA records. On Feb. 8, the company was cited for failing to "establish, implement, and maintain a written Respiratory Protection Program" for an employee who was exposed to high levels of sodium hydroxide. In 2018, the company was cited for not providing employees with proper eye protection. According to the citation, some employees were working with corrosive chemicals known to cause serious eye irritation. The company was fined $5,115 for the violation, records show.
In 95-degree temperatures and 55 percent humidity, firefighters battled three simultaneous blazes on Apple Valley Drive in the Belford section on Saturday morning, according to a fire department spokesman. Two homes and a recreational vehicle between both houses were reported to be ablaze at 11:47 a.m. when firefighters from the Middletown Township Fire Department were called to the scene, spokesman Dennis W. Fowler said. One of the houses sustained heavy fire damage to its left side first floor and attic, while the other sustained heavy fire damage to its right side and heavy smoke damage throughout. The RV was destroyed, Fowler said. New Jersey Natural Gas and Jersey Central Power & Light Co. shut off utilities to both homes.

Jason Dilley and Kelly Banko are used to being at the scene of car crashes, as part of their volunteer work with the Chester First Aid Squad. But in mid-July, the young couple found themselves on the other side, when they were involved in a motorcycle crash. "Both Jason and Kelly spend countless hours giving back to others and now it is our time to return the favor," a friend of the couple's, Paul Sharpe, wrote in a fundraising effort for the pair. Dilley and Banko were injured in a crash on July 13, and taken to Geisinger Hospital in Pennsylvania by helicopter. "Luckily, both of them are alive and stable today but have a long road to recovery," Sharpe said. Both contribute to the community in more ways than one. Dilley is the Chief of the Chester First Aid squad and a firefighter with the Chester Fire Company, and an EMT for Atlantic Mobile Health and Morris County OEM.

The city of Trenton sent Engine Co. 8 back to its firehouse on Stuyvesant Avenue Thursday morning, four days after suddenly shuttering the century-old building in the West Ward due to structural issues. Engine Co. 8 was temporarily relocated about two miles west on Sunday to the firehouse on West State Street, which houses Engine Co. 9. The city administration had an engineer examine the Stuyvesant Ave. building, which opened in 1914. "A structural engineer gave the green light for operation. There were minor, non-hazardous, electrical issues that are being addressed; only slight upgrades to the system are needed," city spokesman Connor Ilchert said. "The City needed to ensure that its employees were in a safe working environment," he said of the closure. Ilchert confirmed that the structural concern was the floor, as firefighters suspected.
Roswell firefighter Jeff Stroble, 46, died Sunday at a hospital in Lubbock, Texas. Stroble was working to prepare fireworks for the City of Roswell's Fourth of July fireworks display when an explosion occurred – leaving him in critical condition. Roswell Fire Chief Devin Graham shared the following statement: "It is with great sadness we announce the passing of one of our own Roswell Fire Department Firefighters. Fire Apparatus Operator Jeff Stroble, 46, passed away in a Lubbock hospital today, July 21st, after battling to recover from his injuries sustained in an explosion on June 5, 2019. Services will be announced once arrangements have been finalized. On behalf the City of Roswell, our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with his family and the entire Roswell Fire Department." Stroble had been with the Roswell Fire Department for 17 years.

Eleven firefighters and one resident were taken to an area hospital Friday when a noxious combination of cleaning supplies triggered a Level 3 hazardous materials situation at a building in Boston's South End. The building was evacuated after a combination of bleach and Murphy's Oil Soap created a noxious, potentially dangerous combination on the third floor of a 5-story rooming house, Boston fire officials said. "If it's inhaled to a considerable extent, it can cause some serious damage," said Boston Fire Deputy Chief Robert Calobrisi. "It can really affect you mucous membranes." The 12 people were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. The building has since been ventilated. Police said they received a call around 12:15 p.m. for a reported hazmat situation at 1740 Washington St.

It's literally one of a kind, and Hadley Township Fire Chief Kurt Nass says his department's shiny new pumper truck is the "future of firefighting" and the department is excited to show off the new vehicle. Nast said since his department tries to get 24-25 years out of each of its vehicles. "We don't want to order what he need right now," said the chief, and instead they try to think of what they'll need 10-15 years from now. Nass believes they have it in the department's new Spencer pumper truck built in South Haven in southwest Michigan. In the new truck when the operator slides up the door to the pump control panel there aren't a lot of gauges and nobs. Instead, there's a small black computer screen. Nass said Hadley's new truck is the first pumper in the United States with the SAM (Scene Apparatus Management) System.

Last year, the deadliest wildfire season in state history swept across California. More than 8,000 fires burned nearly two million acres and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to suppress.* In a matter of minutes, a town named Paradise was engulfed in flame and almost completely destroyed; 85 people died. The United States had been living in fear of such devastation since the early years of World War II when fire was seen as a weapon of war. And for almost as long, we've had Smokey Bear, sweetly but insistently reminding each of us of our role in protecting the country from this danger: "Remember—only you can prevent forest fires." In 1942, Japanese submarines shelled an oil field outside Santa Barbara, near the 2,700-square-mile Los Padres National Forest.
The rescue of the driver of a runaway school bus was caught on camera in Minnesota. Police say the driver suffered a medical issue, then drove straight into the path of oncoming traffic. No children were on board. In an attempt to stop the bus, a police officer pulled in front of it and slammed on his brakes, but it was still pushing his cruiser forward. When an assistant fire chief saw what was happening, he ran to the bus and jumped inside. "Let's do it, now or never. Opened the door, slammed open the door, threw it in park, and threw the key on the floor," said assistant fire chief Greg Meyer. The driver was taken to a hospital.
