I'm trying to confirm some bits from memory. At this point NIX does no
VGA and only uses serial console, right? The machine I'm trying to
boot it on is not well behaved and I'm starting with the simplest
questions.

It'll display a text console on a monitor, or you can use serial.
No rio, though.

Great, it may well be I need a configuration that doesn't use vga.
