I met Derek Murphy at the Willamette Writers conference after his presentation on book cover design, which was very intelligent.  He sent me this book cover for my first book.  The response to it was universally and overwhelmingly positive when I shared it on Facebook, so today I'm going to replace it as the ebook cover on KDP and Smashwords.  I am so jazzed, because I think it could really help improve sales.

Who should I contact about getting the cover image switched on the NIWA site?

And if anyone else has NIWA member books up on a site for promo, let me know so I can send you the new image.

Wow, Amber - this cover is gorgeous!

NIWA posted this to their FB page - more evidence that covers have a big impact on sales:

Got it changed on KDP and Smashwords, and on my own website.  Next stop Goodreads.

Does anybody have any tips on switching covers?  Things you might not think of right away, or lessons learned from experience?

Goodreads requires a Librarian to make the change.

When you switch...switch for good. Don't try to keep selling your stash of old ones.

Thanks for the info, Amber. I went on Derek's site. His covers are wonderful. I actually reached out to him for my fourth book. He's swamped right now, but I hope to hear back from him.

Courtney, did you see the free ebooks and tools on his site?  The one about How to Publish for Almost Nothing has some good thoughts and resources I'd never heard of and useful even if a person isn't stripped for cash, and his 300 Best fonts for book covers by genre is worth a look.  Right now is conference time, and he's attending and presenting at several, but hopefully he'll have more time after that.

Angela, that would be great.  Should I email you the new cover?

Yes please. Email me the cover and a link to your book on Goodreads.

(I’m kinda slammed tonight working on my own book but I’ll do yours as well as Courtney’s this week.)

I will definitely check that out. Thank you. I did hear back from him. He's too busy right now to work on my cover, but gave me some good advice on my concept. Nice guy!

A couple things that stood out in his presentation:  the overuse of shadowed text, meaning adding 'dimension' and contrast to it by using shadowing, often doesn't look as good as we think;  don't use an image you get off an image site 'as is,' otherwise you will sooner or later discover 16 other self-published books using the same image on the cover, make sure to work it over so it's unique;  consider high contrast colors like red or yellow against teal, which you will see in striking movie posters;  don't design your book cover only for the thumbnail, though that's considered common wisdom right now, because it often leads to covers that look bad in closer view.

Right on Amber. Between my liteary agent, graphic artist, publisher on a previous book cover, we created a fine cover with vibrant blues and reds. Book covers are so important to selling your book--readers can interpret different visions and meanings.

Which link did you follow? World Castle Publishing? If you open near top Our Authors and scroll down to R. J. Hepner it should work. Generally other sites mostly cover Book one of the series. Hope it does. Ron

You gave us a link to "World Class Publishing", not World Castle. Here's the link with the covers:
