I just got a call from someone saying he was from the "Windows 7 Support
Center" or some such, saying that my computer was giving a lot of error
messages and they wanted to to help me out. He next asked me if I was
near my computer. Besides the transparent hook to a scam, I'm not even
running Windows on any computer--or at least not Windows 7. I do
occasionally fire up virtualbox with Windows XP...but disregarding the
fact that he mentioned my "Windows 7 operating system", it's obvious
nonsense.

Instead of rolling my eyes and hanging up, I should have stayed on the
line to see where it all went. Most of you probably don't have
landlines, so you'll probably never get such a call. I'm no security
expert, but I wonder where that could have led. Simply get me to
surrender personal information? Try to get me to install something on my
system? eh

I have heard of this before, it leads to a website with a rootkit.

Ah. I take it this has been going on for a while then. It must be good business for them, then. Whatever they're accomplishing with their rootkit.
