Can we import a mediawiki dump onto this? We have a dump of all the lug content accumulated over the past (when all the hostels were connected, we had an active student server and the world was a better place), stashed somewhere in some sysadmin/would-have-been-sysadmin/wanna-be-sysadmin's harddisk and we hope to retrieve that someday. It is rumoured that this dump is in the format of a mediawiki sql dump. I'd like our new wiki to be prepared to import it, if someday down the lane we happen to get hold of it.

P.S: I've added nitklug to the discussion. On all wiki discussions please include this group. We're sharing the wiki with NITK LUG. And to join LUG, just go to http://groups.google.com/group/nitklug and click join.

Hey,
Please check out dokuwiki : http://www.dokuwiki.org/dokuwiki.
This is very simple to setup and easy to maintain.Dokuwiki does not
use any database.
So try setting up Dokuwiki on your laptops and try it , then we can
decide on which one to use(mediawiki or dokuwiki),

Comparisons between the two :

Is there any significant advantage of dokuwiki?

From the comparision the main difference seems to be : Dokuwiki does not use DB, but stores as text files. This alone can't be a significant advantage. It could be a disadvantage also. There are loads of disadvantages of storing data in files vs storing in DB. Besides a simple mysql db creation is simple, and that is all you have to do, the mediawiki install takes care of everything else.

other minor differences will exist between the two.

Regarding installation, I am aware of mediawiki installs, and they are smooth and cake walk. unless there is an super easy way to interconvert mediawiki <==> dokuwiki formats, it is better to stay with mediawiki.

@george: do you happen to know who has the lug dump. In case LUG needs an hosting for WIKI, I have hosting space and we can host it there.

Last I heard, it was with you. Then shashi. Then he said he never got it. Some say neptune may have it.
We've got a public hosting. Just need the wiki set up, the dump imported and new content posted.
