Hello,

This applies to all minors who were given or will be given Canadian Citizenship when their parents apply for citizenship.

The citizenship rules have changed since 2009, but the following rule was in effect before 2009 and is still valid after 2009 when the new rules came into effect.

After a minor who was given citizenship becomes an adult, he/she has to apply for a "Certificate of Retention of Citizenship" before he/she attains the age of 28 years old. If this certificate is not obtained that person is not a Canadian citizen.

To verify this information, please search for 'Certificate of Retention of citizenship' on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.

When the web page comes up please select the appropriate selection of hyperlink and then answer the questions as to whether the adult who was a minor is a Canadian citizen.

The above applies to my 2 sons who were minors when they became citizens in November 2007.

Hope this information is useful to your children.

Mario.
