Hi,

I have apache2 installed on my system with Kubuntu 12.10. I have been facing this issue for 2 days, I tried to open my localhost  and it got redirected to http://127.0.0.1/corporate/webpages/login.jsp, which shows the login page for the 'cyberoam'. So I thought that this might be a problem of web-server, possibly it wasn't able to access the /etc/hosts file. I tried restarting the web-server and my system also, then re-installing the web server, sadly nothing worked. I then asked my friend to open his localhost, and he was landed into the same issue. It then made me get to the conclusion that this a problem of out college network.

This is the content of my hosts file, in case it is useful :

127.0.0.1       localhost
127.0.1.1       transformer
127.0.0.1       local.scholiverse.com
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1     ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters

Even accessing local.scholiverse.com took me to the server scholiverse.com rather than the directory that I have specified in the conf file.

Anyone else getting this? and any ideas to fix this??
Thanks in advance.

Then I tried this http://172.16.1.11/corporate/webpages/login.jsp in my browser and it landed me to same Cyberoam login page.

I can confirm that this behaviour is NOT seen in our hostel. So, this might not be a college-wide network problem.

Okay issue is fixed. It was because I had given manual proxy in my proxy settings, that was making this happen, still not clear about the whole thin. It will be great for me if somebody could explain, why giving manual proxy is making the browser to override the hosts file. Is it that in case of manual proxy setting the system first refers to the proxy server, and then the hosts settings in my local??

When using a proxy, you can add hostnames/ip addresses to the 'No Proxy for' or Exceptions list, depending on the browser. That way when using them, the proxy server is not referred to.
