friends i was going through the latest India Today Rankings of Best
Colleges 2009.

NIT Rourkela, our institute has slipped 4 places down from a
lackluster 18 to a disappointing 21.

* we are now the 7th best institute for admission under AIEEE exam,
behind
- NIT Surathkal - Rank 11
- NIT Warangal - Rank 13
- DCE - Rank 15
- IIIT Hyderabad - Rank 16
- NIT Trichy- Rank 17
- NIT Allahabad- Rank 19
- NIT Calicut- Rank 20

* Our institute was ranked 25th in terms of placement , the second
from bottom.

Those who cleared VIT are in for bad news as it is ranked 10th.

I know many of us will argue that the system of evaluation is biased
or perhaps flawed but the fact remains that the perceptions will be
guided by these ratings and rankings.

My 2 paisa on the issue

Magazines almost always come out with a list of colleges during this
time of the year. The authenticity of the rankings is doubtful.
Ratings and rankings need to be taken with a pinch of salt. I am sure
most of us will choose to ignore the ratings published by this
magazine, or for that matter, most of the magazines. I strongly
believe that the rankings are based purely on secondary research.
Moreover, I don't think any rating/assessment agencies have consulted
the students of the institute while preparing their report.
As far as perception is
concerned, public memory is short lived. I don't think rankings have
ever dented or glorified the image of any institute. The concerned
people try to get information via primary research rather than
depending on lists that are impossible to verify.

Face it... placements at NIT Rourkela do suck big time and it has been
aplty reflected in the rankings. No doubt about that. Given the ever
increasing complacency of the college administration toward placement
and toward BTech students as a whole, it will come as a surprise if
our college do slip some more positions. I guess the only reason that
our college has been constanly showing in the top 20 or top 25 is
beacuse it is an NIT and a older one as compared to other ones- given
that secondary research is the source of most of the rankings, this is
a very probable reason.

As far as I know, even NIT Nagpur has been developing quite a bit in
the placement front in the past few years and I can safely say that
last year they had surpassed us-especially in the CSE department- with
the number of companies visiting them were far more than us, with the
notable mention of MS, Oracle visiting them.

The student placement body, nevertheless, is doing a very good job
indeed this year but because of the recession, results are yet to be
seen but we all do seriously want that placements do turn out good
this year with atleast one or two superdreams visiting for each
branch.

I aptly agree with both Aneek and Siddharth though both their views
maybe diverging. On one hand ranking like these are often conducted on
bogus data and i doubt that the India today group would have even sent
a mail or carried out any sort of information check on our college.
Nevertheless if the they would have gone through the painstaking
process then no doubt our institute would have been ranked like below
- "50-60 " in student care ------------
yes some institutes are worse than ours have faith in this fact
- " 20 -30 " in Placements
- " 20- 30" in faculty
and so on and so forth.

The argument goes that we belong to a corridor in India which the most
backward or least industrialized but technology has reached such
heights that such arguments no longer have any weight . With the
advent of video conferencing, remote testing and other performance
evaluation methods we can attract the best names in the industry .
Only through adoption of such technology and open mindedness can we
reach the light at the end of the tunnel but alas the sole
responsibility for such changes lay in hands
of............................... i neednt go any further.

Yes i also agree with kaushik's views but don't know how come he came up with these rankings....Listen if you want change take the proper steps...You want some facility make a report and approach the director and i m sure if he will give it a look worthy of the plan...unsystematic sounds are considered noise....so if you want some amenities then take proper course to get it...for example the inter hostel lan connection...we r now grown ups...almost engineers...and we sud learn to take responsibility....thing is everytime it is not given....

@ Siddharth give some respect man....if you dont have respect for your institute then it doesnt help the cause...you are going to pass out of the institute in a year and going to join some firm (I wish its as big a firm as it gets)  but if at that time you have this attitude towards your institute then what's the impression that the people of those companies are going to have on NIT Rkl??  May be this is not the sole reason for disappointing placement scenario..but think about it..this may be a cause..and it is our duty to eradicate any fault in us before pointing our fingers at any one else....
