nissimmusic: how will I ever beat June 2012?

I’ve just arrived in St. Paul, Minnesota, for the last leg of what has been a very busy, very productive, and extremely rewarding month of June. By the end of the month, my work will have been heard in Buffalo, St-Denis, Paris, and here, each performance of which I have been able to attend. For those of you who don’t already know, the first of those performances - of Trio for violin, cello, and percussion, at the June in Buffalo Festival - was reviewed, dare I say, glowingly, by Allan Kozinn in the New York Times. The pull quote looks a bit like this:

A huge thank you is due to the members of Ensemble Interface (http://www.ensembleinterface.com/) who performed Trio for taking the extra time to work through the piece and producing a fine interpretation.
The third performance was a command performance at Paris’s Instituto Cervantes, a reward, I think, as much for Louella Alatiit’s brilliant performance of the initial fragment from J. Sibelius in Provence for Baroque violin and live electronics as much as for the (fragmentary) piece itself, which will hopefully take on more shape as it gets longer and better filled-in.
And the fourth, which will take place on June 29 in St. Paul, is a benefit and warm-up for the finally-coming-to-fruition New Music for Old Instruments recording project. (Info on the concert here: http://kfai.org/events/community-events/new-music-for-old-instruments-works-of-nissim-schaul-with-flying-forms) Flying Forms, a name that has often graced this newsletter’s virtual pages, and their good buddy, Tulio Rondon on viola da gamba, will give the world premiere of the entire Four Preludes for Harpsichord, for Baroque Trio (Marc, Tami, and Tulio have played the outer movements before, but the middle two remain unheard), as well as fresh performances of Prelude and Fantasia for solo harpsichord and Nuevos Misterios for amplified Baroque violin and harpsichord. Then, on July 2 and 3, we’ll head down to St. Bridget’s Church near Iowa City, IA, to record those three pieces for the CD we’ve been promising you all for a couple of years now. We’re almost there!
I’m going to try to blog regularly about the experience here, the rehearsals, concert, and recording. The state of Iowa and studio recording will both be brand new to me, so I’m both nervous and excited about the coming week. I’ll try to make this process of discovery interesting! Je viens d’arriver à St-Paul, à l’état de Minnesota, pour la dernière étape d’un mois de juin très plein, très productif, et extrêmement enrichissant. Avant la fin du mois, mes oeuvres auront été jouées à Buffalo (NY), St-Denis, Paris, et ici - “le compositeur étant présent” à chacun. Pour vous qui ne le savez pas déjà, la première de ces représentations - du Trio pour violon, violoncelle, et percussions, au festival June in Buffalo - a réçu une critique très positive de Allan Kozinn dans le New York Times. Un gros merci est dû aux membres de l’Ensemble Interface (http://www.ensembleinterface.com/) qui ont joué Trio pour avoir pris le temps d’extra nécessaire pour l’apprendre et d’avoir produis une interprétation fine de la pièce.
La troisième représentation a été une reprise commandée à l’Institut Cervantes de Paris, à mon avis une récompense plus pour l'interprétation brillante du fragment initial du J. Sibelius in Provence pour violon baroque et traitement de son en temps réel que pour le morceaux (fragmentaire) lui-même, qui prendra plus de forme tant qu’il s’agrandit.
Et le quatrième concert, qui aura lieu le 29 juin à St-Paul, est pour soutenir et pour préparer l’enregistrement du projet d’enregistrement de New Music for Old Instruments, qui voit finalement le jour. (infos sur le concert au http://kfai.org/events/community-events/new-music-for-old-instruments-works-of-nissim-schaul-with-flying-forms) Flying Forms, un nom vu souvent dans les pages virtuelles de ce bulletin, et leur bel ami, Tulio Rondon sur la viole de jambe, créeront l’oeuvre complète Four Preludes for Harpsichord, for Baroque Trio (Marc, Tami, et Tulio ont déjà joué les mouvements extérieurs mais les deux au milieu restent à être crées). Aussi sur le programme sont des nouvelles interprétations de Prelude and Fantasia pour clavecin seul et Nuevos Misterios pour violon baroque et clavecin, tous le deux amplifiés. Puis, le 2 et le 3 juillet, on va descendre à l’église de St-Bridget, près de Iowa City, Iowa, pour enregistrer ces trois pièces pour le CD qu’on vous promet depuis quelques ans. On est presque là !
J’essayerai de bloguer régulièrement au sujet de mon expérience ici - les répètes, le concert, et l’enregistrement. L’Iowa et l’enregistrement dans le studio sont tous les deux nouveau à moi, donc je suis nerveux et aussi excité pour la semaine prochaine. J'essayerai de rendre intéressant ce processus de découvert ! Ça, c’est bien assez pour un bulletin, donc c’est tout. Le prochain numéro contiendra des nouvelles de Minnesota, et peut-être quelques nouveaux enregistrements (Harpsichrd Swirl et le fragment de J. Sibelius, j’espère) à écouter. Et je devrais avoir le master tape d’un nouveau CD !
