There's a lot going on these days - home improvements to be done, orchestral pieces to be finished, trios to begin - which may have something to do with the recent lack of newsletters.

So I'll start with the most pressing concern: This Sunday, May 1, my new piece,
(Restful Waters)(מי מנחות)
, will be premiered in Urbana, Illinois, by the good Moon Young Ha's new group,
the MEANS New Music Ensemble. The show is from 4 to 7:30 at the
Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (202 South Broadway, Urbana, IL).
It's free and, along with premieres by Graham Flett, Quinn Collins, and MOON,
there will also be Swedish folk music and a group called Zach May and the
Maps. I won't be at the show, but Moon is talking about Skyping me after
my piece is played so I'll get to talk live from Europe... So if you
happen to be in or know someone in Champaign-Urbana, please be sure to
come/tell them to come!

Alors, je commence avec le machin le plus pressant : dimanche le premier mai, à Urbana, Illinois, ma nouvelle pièce, (Restful Waters)(מי מנחות) (faut-il ajouter un autre langue ? “Des Eaux Paisibles”), sera créer par le nouveau groupe de Moon Young Ha qui s’appelle MEANS New Music Ensemble. De 16h00 à 19h30, c’est entrée libre au Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (202 South Broadway, Urbana, IL). Il y aura aussi des créations de Graham Flett, Quinn Collins, et MOON lui-même – et aussi un bal traditionnel suédois et un groupe, “Zach May and the Maps”. Je ne serai pas là, mais peut-être je vais rejoigner le concert en live par Skype après ma pièce. Si vous êtes, ou si vous connaissez qq’un à Chapagn-Urbana venez/dites-lui de venir !

But what's really been taking up my time has been the orchestral piece I'm
trying to finish really soon for the Acanthes Festival in Metz, in July.
And after that, I will have approximately three weeks to write a trio for
violin, 'cello, and percussion from scratch for the Music10 program in
Switzerland. Both of these programs are pretty neat to be a part
of. For Acanthes, I will rehearse the piece (tentatively called
"Scratching the Surface" or "Scratching the Ice", or maybe
"Scrathing the Ice's Surface"??) with the Orchestre National de
Lorraine and possibly have a performance. Music10's big drawing point,
besides the lovely Alpine location and the good teaching, is that one of the
members of each ensemble (in my case, the violinist) is from the acclaimed new
music band eighth blackbird.

Mais ce qui m’occupe en vrai, c’est une pièce pour orchestre que j’essaie de terminer très vite pour le festival Acanthes à Metz en juillet. Après celui-là, j’aurai besoin d’écrire de zéro un trio pour violon, violoncelle, et percussion pour le programme “Music10,” qui aura lieu en Suisse. Je suis très content d’être sélectionner pour tous les deux programmes. À Acanthes, l’Orchestre National de Lorraine va répéter et peut-être exécuter la pièce orchestrale (s’appelle provisoirement “Scratching the Surface” ou “Scratching the Ice” ou même “Scratching the Ice’s Surface” ??). Le charme de Music10, appart le lieu alpin et les bons profs, est qu’un des interprètes dans mon ensemble sera un membre (pour moi, le violoniste) du groupe applaudi eighth blackbird.

This orchestra piece has a future, too, in that, in it, I’m developing ideas that
will soon end up in a piece that will be called "Glaces" for my high
school youth orchestra, the Triangle Youth Philharmonic. (The word
"glaces" in French can mean either mirror or ice.) Also coming
up soon are a piece for violin, piano, and percussion for a concert organized
by Sebastian Armoza, a piece for brass ensemble, and possibly a piece for
saxophone/accordion duo. Lots to do, I'd better get back to it!

Le morceau pour orchestre a un avenir intéressant : c’est un développement des idées qui vont se trouver aussi dans une pièce que j’écrirai juste après por mon ancien orchestre de jeunesse, le Triangle Youth Philharmonic. (Celui-là portera le titre “Glaces” – dans le sens de soit un miroir soit de l’eau glacée.) Aussi à venir bientôt, musique pour violon, piano, et percussion grâce à Sebastian Armoza ; pour ensemble de cuivres ; et peut-être pour saxophone et accordéon. Beaucoup à faire – alors à la prochaine …
