I had a busy summer complete with a world premiere in Switzerland and an orchestral reading in Eastern France.  But this fall is shaping up even more full and exciting.  So far I have three performances firmly scheduled (two in the next two weeks!), and a couple more good possibilities.  I'll stick to announcing what’s imminent.

***First, my vocal trio with drone, Rising, was selected to be included on the New Voices Festival — http://composition.cua.edu/newvoices.cfm — at Catholic University in Washington, DC.  I'm honored to be included on the festival.  The piece is going to be performed at 10 AM (yes, that's really early!) on Saturday, September 11 at the St. Vincent de Paul Chapel on CUA's campus in Northern DC, along with works by Lansing McLoskey, Caleb Wenzel, Christopher Wicks, and Mark Winges on a concert of "sacred" music.  Rising is a setting of the Sanctus in Hebrew, Arabic, and Old Church Slavonic, and the vocal lines are loosely based on Gregorian chant, so the label fits, even though I would consider the piece less a prayer than a provocation. (It was written for a workshop in Croatia, the specific mix of languages and styles an intentional reference to the region's lengthy troubles.)  It is, nonetheless, a meditative work which will be perfectly at home in the deep echo of St. Vincent de Paul - astute readers will remember that this is the piece that we recorded in a stairwell!

This is also a good moment to thank again, as publicly and as heartfelt as I can, Jane McMahan, who commissioned the piece and saw it through much difficulty to fruition, and Kate Smith, Anne Donlon, Mollie Schwartz, Dylan Kumara Widjiono, and Kimmy Szeto for working your butts off to produce an incredible recording of the piece last year – without you, this rare “composer win” would not have been possible!  (So go get a preview of the show and hear their great work at http://nissimmusic.org/music/rising.shtml)

***Now, wait, what?!  You weren't in Switzerland to hear the premiere of my Trio?  How shocking!  But you'll get another chance if you're in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, September 18th.  New Music Raleigh is putting on a selection of music by composers with Raleigh roots under the aegis of SparkCon, a local multimedia festival.   The concert will be at Flanders Gallery (302 S. West Street in Thriving Downtown Raleigh) at 4pm on the 18^th, and it will be preceded by a round-table chat between featured composers, performers, and I don’t know who else at 3pm.

 

Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend on the 18^th, but I am excited that I will be in the audience on Sunday, September 12 as New Music Raleigh kicks off its second season with a concert of music by Paul Lansky, Cameron Britt, Jay Batzer, Judith Shatin, and John Luther Adams – and as many of you who can should come, too.  It will be an evening of music that explores textural sonic landscapes ranging from serene to dense and electric, from the vast Alaskan tundra to the busiest street corner in Tokyo.  This will be at the Murphy School Theater, 224 Polk Street, near Krispy Kreme, at 7pm.

***What else is up in the not-too-distant-future?  The Trio, rearranged for three flutes and percussion, will make its way to New York on November 30^th, at Kelli Kathmann’s instigation.  There are some possibilities opening up in Minnesota and Oklahoma (stay tuned).  And my new violin and piano duo, A Suivre, will be premiered by Esther Noh and Jacob Rhodebeck in New York on February 8, 2011.  Plus, I’m coming ever-closer to actually finishing the long-promised orchestra piece I’m writing for my old youth orchestra, the Triangle Youth Philharmonic.  And in October, I’m starting a masters program at l’Université de Paris 8, in St-Denis, where I’ll be studying what’s possible given some period instruments (harpsichords, viols, serpents, sackbuts) and contemporary computer music processing technology.  That’ll be sure to produce a few pieces, too.

J’ai été très occupé cet été, avec une création mondiale en Suisse et un déchiffrage orchestral à Metz.  Mais cet automne se semble d’être encore plus excitant et plein de spectacles.  Jusqu’à maintenant j’ai trois interprétations (2 dans les 2 semaines suivantes ! ) déjà fixées, avec la bonne possibilité de quelques autres.  Je m’en tiens aux nouvelles imminentes.

 

***D’abord, mon trio vocal avec bourdon, Rising, a été sélectionné pour le festival « New Voices » — http://composition.cua.edu/newvoices.cfm — à Catholic University à Washington, DC.  C’est un honneur d’être sélectionné pour ce festival.   Le concert est à 10h00 (oui, très tôt ! ), samedi le 11 septembre à la Chapelle de St-Vincent-de-Paul sur le campus de l’université, dans le nord de DC – avec des œuvres de Lansing McLoskey, Caleb Wenzel, Christopher Wicks, and Mark Winges.  C’est un concert de la musique « sacrée ».  Le texte de Rising est le Sanctus, mais en hébreu, arabe, et vieux-slave ; et les lignes vocales sont plus ou moins basée sur le chant Grégorien, donc le classement n’est pas bête, même si je le considère plutôt une provocation qu’une prière. (C’était écrit pour un atelier en Croatie, et le mélange de langues et de styles est une référence intentionnelle aux difficultés historiques et contemporaines de la région.)  La pièce est néanmoins une œuvre calme et méditative qui sonnera parfaitement dans l’écho profond de la Chapelle – les lecteurs astucieux se souviendront qu’on a enregistré cette pièce dans une cage d’escalier !

 

C’est un bon moment aussi de remercier, encore une fois, si en public et si sincèrement possible, Jane McMahan, qui a commandé la pièce et l’a dirigé à travers des grandes difficultés pour la mener à bien, et Kate Smith, Anne Donlon, Mollie Schwartz, Dylan Kumara Widjiono, et Kimmy Szeto, qui ont bossé comme des tarés pour produire un enregistrement incroyable l’année dernière.  Sans ça, cette « composer-win » rare n’aurait pas été possible ! ***Eh bien quoi ?!  Vous n’avez pas été en Suisse pour écouter la création de mon Trio ?  Que c’est choquant, ça !  Mais vous auriez une autre chance si vous êtes à Raleigh, en Caroline du nord samedi, le 18 septembre. New Music Raleigh produit une sélection des œuvres écrites par des compositeurs avec des racines de Raleigh sous l’égide du SparkCon, un festival multimédia local.  Le concert aura lieu au Flanders Gallery (302 S. West Street dans le centre-ville florissant de Raleigh) à 16h00 le 18.  Il sera précédé par une table ronde incluant des compositeurs et interprètes qui figurent au programme, à 15h00.

 

Malheureusement, je ne peux pas assister le concert du 18, mais ça m’excite que je serai dans le public le 12 septembre (dimanche) quand New Music Raleigh lance sa deuxième saison avec un concert de la musique de Paul Lansky, Cameron Britt, Jay Batzer, Judith Shatin, et John Luther Adams, et vous devrez venir nombreux, aussi.  Le programme examine des paysages sonores, du serein au densément électrique, de l’énorme toundra alaskien au carrefour le plus fréquenté de Tokyo.  Cela aura lieu au Murphy School Theater, 224 Polk Street, près du Krispy Kreme, à 19h00.

***Quoi d’autre de neuf dans le proche-future ?  Le Trio, arrangé pour trois flûtes et percussion, se produira à New York le 30 novembre, un projet lancé par Kelli Kathmann.  Il y a aussi quelques possibilités à Minnesota et à Oklahoma.  A suivre.  Et mon nouveau duo pour violon et piano, qui s’appelle aussi A Suivre, sera créé par Esther Noh et Jacob Rhodebeck à New York le 8 février.  En plus, je suis de plus en plus proche de terminer finalement ma pièce, longuement attendu, pour mon ex-orchestre de jeunesse, le Triangle Youth Philharmonic.  Et en octobre, je commence un Masters à l’Université de Paris 8 à St-Denis, où je vais rechercher ce qu’on peut faire avec les instruments anciens (des clavecins, des violes, des serpents, des sacqueboutes) et la technologie contemporaine de l’électroacoustique.  De la musique avec son origine là ?  A suivre …
